Four kinds of Swedish proof as Swedex ends in 2026

Swedish as a foreign language has no widely used standard test comparable to TOEFL for English or DELE for Spanish. The best-known general certificate, Swedex, disappears at the end of 2026. After that, a university test in Sweden, a national exam in Finland and the proof that Swedish authorities accept for citizenship remain.

Swedex follows the CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference with six levels from A1 to C2. Tisus is Stockholm University's Swedish test, and YKI is the national language exam of the Finnish National Agency for Education. Tisus is not linked to the CEFR and matches the Swedish upper secondary school subject Swedish 3. SFI (svenska för invandrare) is free Swedish tuition for immigrants, run by the municipalities.

💡

If you need proof of Swedish in 2027 or later, plan with Tisus, with YKI in Finland or with courses in Sweden. Ask your university, employer or authority first which proof it requires.

2

Last Swedex dates abroad until 20 December 2026

According to Folkuniversitetet, Swedex can no longer be taken from 31 December 2026. Resits of single parts must also happen by that date. Swedex comes in two versions, one test for A2 and B1 and one for B2 and C1.

The list of exam dates outside Sweden includes these sessions in late 2026, among others.

  • San Francisco on 8 November, A2 to C1
  • Leipzig on 13 November and 18 December, A2 to C1
  • Milan on 15 November and Barcelona on 12 December, A2 to C1
  • Tokyo on 12 and 13 December, all four levels across the two days
  • Sofia on 20 December for B2 and C1, the last date on the list

Folkuniversitetet lists dates in Sweden separately. The list of dates abroad gives no registration deadlines, so you register directly with the exam centre.

⚠️
  • A failed part can no longer be retaken after 31 December 2026.
  • Courses that still advertise Swedex in 2027 prepare you for an exam that no longer exists.

Which proof of Swedish suits a degree, a job or citizenship

The right exam follows from your goal and from the list of the body that asks for proof. Tisus is Stockholm University's Swedish test, YKI is Finland's national language exam, Swedex is Folkuniversitetet's exam and SFI (svenska för invandrare) is free Swedish tuition run by the municipalities.

Proof for an employer in 2026Swedexonly until 31 Dec 2026

Since 6 June 2026 Sweden has required knowledge of Swedish for naturalisation. A dedicated language test does not exist yet, and its introduction has been postponed. The Swedish Migration Agency accepts, among other proof, the highest SFI course, school grades in Swedish and a Tisus result.

For Finnish citizenship, the Finnish National Agency for Education states that a YKI result at intermediate level 3 or higher is enough. YKI is available in Swedish as well as Finnish.

Tisus requires a pass in all three parts

Tisus (Test i svenska för universitets- och högskolestudier) tests reading comprehension, writing proficiency and speaking proficiency. Reading and writing usually take place on a Tuesday morning and last about four hours together. The time of the oral exam appears in the invitation, which arrives about three weeks before.

You must pass all three parts. If you fail one part, you retake only that part within a year, and if you fail two or three parts, you retake the whole test. A passed Tisus does not expire.

An online Tisus preparation course works with long non-fiction texts under time pressure, argumentative essays that a teacher marks, and free speaking on a prepared topic. Stockholm University points out that the test is now more difficult than the published sample tests, so practise with current newspaper and specialist texts as well.

5

YKI Swedish tests four skills separately

YKI is the national language exam of the Finnish National Agency for Education and measures language in everyday situations. It has a basic, an intermediate and an advanced level and assesses listening, speaking, reading and writing separately. According to the agency, YKI serves for applications for a job or a study place, for Finnish citizenship and as proof for employers.

For your preparation this means that you cannot neglect any skill. An online course practises recordings about daily life and work, short speaking tasks, reading texts and writing tasks such as emails or notices.

ℹ️

The Swedish spoken in Finland sounds different from the Swedish of Sweden. If you take YKI Swedish, make sure your course includes recordings of speakers from Finland.

5 common mistakes in Swedish exam preparation

Most mistakes with Swedish exams happen before the first day of practice. Five are typical. They concern Swedex from Folkuniversitetet, Tisus, Stockholm University's Swedish test, and YKI, Finland's national language exam.

  1. You book a course that still prepares for Swedex in 2027, although the exam ends in 2026.
  2. You practise for Tisus only with the published sample tests and underestimate today's level.
  3. You prepare for YKI with reading and grammar alone, although YKI scores each of the four skills separately.
  4. You only listen to Swedish from Sweden, although you take YKI in Finland.
  5. You take an exam without first checking which proof your university, employer or authority accepts.

Practice material and self-study often suffice for reading and listening. For writing and speaking you need feedback from a teacher who knows the exam's requirements.
