Swedish hurdles in the order of the CEFR levels

A general online Swedish course takes you through the levels of the CEFR. The CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, divides language ability into six levels from A1 to C2. For Swedish, the Foreign Service Institute (FSI), the language school of the US Department of State, expects about 550 class hours to reach a professional working level.

Grammar comes easily to English speakers, while pronunciation needs practice at every level. A course that builds Swedish up step by step can spread the hurdles in this order.

LevelFocus in the Swedish courseSuitable course type
A1å, ä and ö, vowel length, en-words and ett-wordsGeneral Swedish
A2attached article, plural groups, verb in second positionGeneral Swedish
B1inte in subordinate clauses, pitch accent in conversationGeneral Swedish and conversation
B2free speaking, news, false friendsConversation

The table is a suggested order, not a fixed syllabus. Ask the provider in which lessons the course trains pitch accent, because a textbook alone hardly conveys it.

💡

If you study five hours a week next to a job, you cover about 250 hours a year. According to the Cambridge English guide values for English, reaching B1 at that pace takes about one and a half to two years. Swedish shares a lot of everyday vocabulary with English, so English speakers tend to need less time.

2

Practising vowel length, the sj-sound and pitch accent

Swedish has nine vowel letters, and each can be long or short. Length changes meaning. Tak means roof and has a long a, while tack means thanks and has a short a. Glas (glass) and glass (ice cream) differ in the same way. Spelling helps, because a short vowel is usually followed by a double consonant. A carefully built general course drills such word pairs from the first lesson.

The two word melodies are called accent 1 and accent 2. Anden with accent 1 means the duck, anden with accent 2 means the spirit. In conversation the context almost always makes the meaning clear. Pitch accent therefore belongs in the conversation part of the course, where you repeat whole sentences.

The sj-sound is a breathy fricative with no English equivalent. You hear it in sju (seven) and in sk before front vowels, as in skön (lovely). Teachers train it through repetition and recordings that you compare with the model.

👍 Advantages
  • ✓In a live lesson the teacher hears vowel length and pitch accent and corrects you at once.
  • ✓In a group class you hear the others' mistakes and learn from them too.
👎 Drawbacks
  • ✗An app checks vowel length and the sj-sound with speech recognition, and it judges pitch accent less reliably.
  • ✗In a self-study course without feedback, wrong vowel lengths easily become habits.
3

Word order and the attached article as grammar hurdles

Swedish grammar is manageable for English speakers, because verbs keep the same form for every person. Three points still need repeated practice in any general course.

1 The attached article

The definite article sits at the end of the noun. En bil (a car) becomes bilen (the car), and ett hus (a house) becomes huset (the house). Whether a noun is an en-word or an ett-word has to be learned with each new word, because no rule predicts it reliably.

2 The verb in second position

In a main clause the verb comes second. Idag går jag means today I go, but word for word it reads today go I. This runs against English word order, where the subject usually comes before the verb.

3 The word inte in subordinate clauses

In a main clause inte (not) follows the verb, as in Han kommer inte (he is not coming). In a subordinate clause it moves in front of the verb, as in Jag vet att han inte kommer (I know that he is not coming).

A general course drills these points with short sentence-building exercises, and conversation with a teacher shows whether they hold up in free speech.

ℹ️

False friends are words that look like English words but mean something else. Fart means speed, gift means married or poison, and barn means child. A general course collects them in a separate word list so that you can revise them on purpose.

4

Conversation courses from A2 for talking without switching to English

Most people in Sweden speak very good English. If you hesitate in a conversation, you can easily get an answer in English and end up practising less Swedish. A conversation course gives you the speaking time that daily life then denies you.

A conversation course usually expects level A2, the second of the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). It works with everyday topics such as housing, work, neighbours and authorities. Three elements are typical for Swedish.

  • You practise addressing people as du, which is normal in Swedish even with strangers and managers.
  • You train short feedback words such as ja, jaha and precis (exactly), which keep a conversation going.
  • You hear different varieties, for example the Swedish of Stockholm, of Skåne in the south and of Finland.

Ask about the maximum group size before you book, because a small group gives you more speaking time.

ℹ️

The Swedish spoken in Finland sounds different from the Swedish spoken in Sweden. If you are moving to Finland, ask the provider for listening material and teachers from Finland.

4 online formats for Swedish by goal and budget

Swedish teachers are scarcer than teachers of English or Spanish, so prices run somewhat higher. The ranges are rough guide values in US dollars or euros from typical offers in 2026, not survey data.

Online group class10 to 25 per hoursteady rhythm, progress from A1 to B2
One-to-one lessons20 to 50 per hourcorrection of vowel length and pitch accent

Intensive pre-move course400 to 1,200 per coursefast start in daily life

Folkuniversitetet, a Swedish adult education association, runs live video courses at several levels. University language centres and continuing education programmes in many countries teach Swedish too, often online. A group class plus an app covers grammar and vocabulary up to B1, and a few one-to-one lessons add pronunciation work, because the teacher listens only to your mistakes.

💡

If you move to Sweden, you can attend SFI there. SFI (svenska för invandrare) is free Swedish tuition for immigrants, run by the municipalities. With B1 from an online course you join SFI at a higher stage.

Swedish for children of families living abroad

Children from Swedish families abroad can attend a distance school with a public mandate. Sofia Distans is a municipal school run by the City of Stockholm. It teaches Swedish pupils who live abroad on behalf of Skolverket, the Swedish National Agency for Education. It serves school years 6 to 9.

The children learn by distance teaching, which works in any time zone. They take either all subjects or single subjects such as Swedish or Swedish as a second language.

For younger children and for children without a Swedish background, a general course with short units, songs and pictures fits. Make sure the teacher practises vowel length and pitch accent from the start.

💡

Before you enrol your child, ask Sofia Distans which fees apply and which state grants exist. The school lists both as a separate topic.

Frequently asked questions about general online Swedish courses

How long does a general online Swedish course take to reach level B1?

A general online Swedish course takes about one and a half to two years to reach B1 at five study hours a week, based on the Cambridge English guide values for English. The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) places Swedish in its group of languages that take English speakers the least time. B1 is the third of the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

What does a general Swedish course practise in pronunciation?

A general Swedish course mainly practises vowel length, the sj-sound and the two word melodies, accent 1 and accent 2. Word pairs such as tak (roof) and tack (thanks) show that vowel length changes meaning. You learn pitch accent most reliably by repeating sentences after a teacher.

From which level is a Swedish conversation course suitable?

A Swedish conversation course is usually suitable from level A2, the second of the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference. Before that, you lack the vocabulary and sentence patterns for free speaking. From A2 the course gives you speaking time that daily life in Sweden often denies you, because most people there speak very good English.

Which Swedish grammar points need the most practice in a general course?

Swedish grammar needs the most practice in a general course on three points: en-words and ett-words, the article attached to the end of the noun, and the position of inte (not) in subordinate clauses. Verbs, by contrast, keep the same form for every person. The verb-second rule in main clauses also takes English speakers some getting used to.

Is there Swedish teaching for children who live abroad?

Swedish teaching for children abroad is offered by Sofia Distans, a municipal school of the City of Stockholm working on behalf of Skolverket. It teaches Swedish pupils in school years 6 to 9 by distance learning. Children take all subjects or single subjects such as Swedish.

How much does a general online Swedish course cost per hour?

A general online Swedish course costs about 10 to 25 US dollars or euros per hour in a group and about 20 to 50 per hour for one-to-one lessons, as of 2026. Swedish teachers are scarcer than teachers of English or Spanish, which pushes prices up. Language apps cost 0 to 15 a month.
