Bengali has no widely recognised standard test

For English, French, Spanish or German, a few large exam systems dominate, such as IELTS, DELF, DELE or the Goethe-Zertifikat. Bengali has no counterpart, although more than 200 million people speak it as their mother tongue. No Bengali exam is linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the six-level scale from A1 to C2, and recognised by universities, employers and authorities worldwide.

The reason lies in demand and funding. Standard tests pay for themselves through exam fees from large numbers of candidates, often because universities or visa offices require them. Bengali is rarely an admission or visa requirement outside Bangladesh and India, so no comparable system has grown.

What exists instead are exams and certificates for narrow purposes: a US speaking interview, three school qualifications, a university course in Dhaka and module exams at universities abroad.

💡

Ask the employer, university or school which proof it accepts before you book any Bengali test preparation. The answer decides the course, the timeline and the cost.

Each proof answers a different question, from how well you speak to which school qualification you hold.

The ACTFL OPI is the Oral Proficiency Interview of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. A CEFR self-assessment with the Council of Europe grid adds a level per skill for your CV, but nobody tests it.

ℹ️

The three school qualifications report a grade, not a CEFR level. Employers outside the UK may need a short explanation of what a GCSE or O Level stands for.

Which Bengali proof fits a job, a degree or school

The right proof follows from the goal and from what the recipient asks for.

GoalProof that fitsWhat to check
Job with a US employer or agencyACTFL OPIthe rating the employer requires
Job in the UK or EuropeGCSE or CEFR self-assessment plus OPIwhether the employer wants an external result

For a CV in Europe, a CEFR level per skill is the common format. The CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference, rates listening, reading, speaking and writing separately. Add the variety, Bangladesh or West Bengal, because employers in aid or trade often need one of them.

⚠️

Online providers sometimes issue their own Bengali certificate with a CEFR level. Such a certificate shows attendance and the provider's own test, not an external result.

Preparing online for the ACTFL OPI in Bengali

The ACTFL OPI is a speaking test in which a certified tester talks with you in Bengali by phone for 15 to 30 minutes while a webcam supervises the session. ACTFL, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, rates the result from Novice to Superior.

Online preparation suits the OPI, because the test itself is a conversation at a distance. A Bengali teacher can run mock interviews by phone or video and train five skills.

  1. Talking without visual cues, since the tester only hears you.
  2. Using the polite apni throughout, because tui sounds rude towards strangers.
  3. Telling past events and placing na (not) correctly after the verb.
  4. Describing places and processes in connected sentences.
  5. Staying in Bengali when a word is missing, by paraphrasing, because the tester rates what you can say in Bengali.
💡

Record every mock interview. Listening back shows where you switch into English, drop the puff of air in aspirated consonants or mix vocabulary from Bangladesh and West Bengal.

Preparing for GCSE, International GCSE and O Level Bengali

Three school qualifications in Bengali come from British exam boards.

  • AQA GCSE Bengali (8638): a GCSE for schools in England, with a specification first taught in 2017.
  • Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Bangla: taught from 2017 and examined since 2019. Pearson describes it as comparable in demand to the reformed GCSEs in the UK.
  • Cambridge O Level Bengali (3204): for learners who already have a working knowledge of the language, offered only in some regions of the world.

Candidates enter through a school or an exam centre registered with the board. Online preparation works best with past papers and the specification, written practice in the Bengali script with corrections, and reading of standard texts.

⚠️

Heritage teenagers who speak Sylheti at home often carry dialect forms into written standard Bengali.

Romanised notes do not help when answers must be written in Bengali script.

Sylheti is a variety from north-east Bangladesh that differs strongly from standard Bengali. A teacher who knows it can mark the differences on purpose.

University of Dhaka courses and module exams as Bengali proof

The Institute of Modern Languages at the University of Dhaka teaches Bangla to foreigners only, in one-year courses of 120 hours each, on site in Dhaka. A certificate from this institute shows structured training at a public university. Online lessons before the stay help you arrive with the script and basic conversation in place.

University module exams are the usual proof in South Asian studies. Heidelberg University's South Asia Institute in Germany, for example, teaches Bengali in small intensive courses. A passed module with a grade and credits is solid proof, even without a CEFR level.

👍 Advantages
  • ✓A Dhaka certificate documents a year of structured Bengali in Bangladesh.
  • ✓A university exam brings credits and a grade that other universities recognise.
👎 Drawbacks
  • ✗The Dhaka course requires living in Dhaka for a year.
  • ✗University exams are open only to enrolled students.

Frequently asked questions about online Bengali test preparation courses

Is there an internationally recognised standard test for Bengali?

No, Bengali has no internationally recognised standard test comparable to IELTS for English or DELE for Spanish. Bengali learners use the ACTFL OPI speaking interview, school qualifications such as GCSE Bengali, a University of Dhaka course certificate or university module exams. Which one counts depends on the employer, university or school.

How do you prepare for the ACTFL OPI speaking interview in Bengali?

You prepare for the ACTFL OPI in Bengali with recorded mock interviews by phone or video. Practise using apni throughout, telling past events with na placed after the verb and paraphrasing instead of switching to English. The OPI itself is a 15- to 30-minute phone conversation rated from Novice to Superior.

Which Bengali school exams can teenagers take?

Teenagers can take three Bengali school exams from British exam boards: the AQA GCSE in Bengali in England, the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Bangla and the Cambridge O Level in Bengali, which is offered in some regions. All three report a grade, not a CEFR level. Candidates enter through a school or registered exam centre.

Which Bengali proof do employers accept without a standard test?

Employers accept Bengali proof such as an ACTFL OPI rating, a GCSE in Bengali, a University of Dhaka certificate or a CEFR self-assessment with teaching hours, since no standard Bengali test exists. US employers use OPI ratings most. Strong proof also names the variety, Bangladesh or West Bengal.

What does a University of Dhaka certificate in Bengali show?

A University of Dhaka certificate in Bengali shows that you completed a one-year Bengali course of 120 hours at the Institute of Modern Languages, which teaches foreigners only. It documents structured training at a public university in Bangladesh. The course takes place on site in Dhaka.

Can an online Bengali course issue an official Bengali certificate?

An online Bengali course can issue its own certificate, but it is not an official Bengali exam result. Such a certificate shows attendance, hours and the provider's own assessment. For external proof, Bengali learners use the ACTFL OPI, a school qualification or a university exam.
