Swedish in Sweden, Finland and across Scandinavia
Swedish is the national language of Sweden, a country of more than ten million people. In Finland it is an official language alongside Finnish. A Swedish-speaking minority lives mainly along the Finnish coast, and on the Åland Islands Swedish is the only official language.
Swedish, Norwegian and Danish are closely related. If you speak Swedish, you can read much of written Norwegian and Danish. Spoken Norwegian is usually easier to follow than spoken Danish, because Danish pronunciation departs further from the spelling.
Adults usually start an online Swedish course for one of five reasons.
- They are moving to Sweden for a job, for example in healthcare, engineering, IT or research.
- They plan a degree or an exchange semester at a Swedish university.
- They have a Swedish-speaking partner or family in Sweden or Finland.
- They work for a Scandinavian company or with Nordic clients.
- They have Swedish roots and want to read family letters and records.
Most people in Sweden speak very good English. Workplaces, authorities, your children's school and your neighbourhood still run in Swedish. If you plan to stay for good, you will need the language.
Swedish takes about 24 weeks according to the FSI
The Foreign Service Institute (FSI), the language school of the US Department of State, places Swedish in its Category I, the group that takes the least time. For Swedish the FSI expects 24 weeks, which at 23 class hours a week comes to about 550 hours of instruction. Another 17 hours of self-study per week come on top. The goal is professional working proficiency in speaking and listening. The figures apply to native English speakers studying full time.
English speakers start with a head start. Old Norse left many words in English, and Swedish shares a lot of everyday vocabulary with English, such as hus (house), bok (book), vinter (winter) and komma (come). Verbs do not change for person, which removes a whole table of endings.
Levels are usually described with the CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It divides language ability into six levels from A1 (beginner) to C2 (near-native).
| CEFR level | What you can do in Swedish |
|---|---|
| A1 | Introduce yourself, shop, ask simple questions |
| A2 | Talk about work, family and housing |
| B1 | Manage daily life in Sweden without English |
| B2 | Take part at work, follow news and specialist texts |
| C1 | Start a degree taught in Swedish |
| C2 | Use Swedish at a near-native level |
If you study five hours a week next to a job, you cover about 250 hours a year. With FSI class time and self-study combined, the working level then takes about four years at that pace. An intensive course before a move shortens the path considerably.
Pitch accent and the sj-sound in Swedish pronunciation
The Swedish alphabet has 29 letters, the 26 Latin letters plus å, ä and ö. Grammar comes easily to English speakers, while pronunciation needs more practice. Four points stand out.
1 Two word melodies
Swedish distinguishes two pitch patterns, which linguists call accent 1 and accent 2. Anden with accent 1 means 'the duck', anden with accent 2 means 'the spirit'. Context usually prevents misunderstandings, but the melody is what makes you sound Swedish over time.
2 The sj-sound
The sj-sound is a breathy fricative that English does not have. You hear it in sju (seven), sjuk (ill) and in sk before front vowels, as in skön (lovely).
3 Soft consonants before front vowels
Before e, i, y, ä and ö, the letters k and g change their sound. Kör (drive!) starts with a sound close to the sh in 'sheep', and göra (to do) starts with a y sound.
4 Long and short vowels
Swedish has nine vowel letters, and each can be long or short. A long o often sounds like oo, so bok (book) sounds like 'book' with a long vowel. The vowel y has no English equivalent and needs dedicated practice.
Listen to a lot of spoken Swedish from the start, for example news in easy Swedish or podcasts for learners. You learn the melody by repeating it aloud, and a textbook alone hardly conveys it.
Swedish grammar and common false friends
Swedish grammar is manageable for English speakers. Five features shape it.
- Verbs have the same form for all persons. Jag är, du är and hon är mean I am, you are and she is.
- Nouns have two genders, en-words and ett-words, such as en bil (a car) and ett hus (a house).
- The definite article is attached to the end of the noun. Bil becomes bilen (the car), and hus becomes huset (the house).
- In main clauses the verb comes second. 'Today I go' becomes Idag går jag, literally 'today go I'.
- In subordinate clauses the word inte (not) moves in front of the verb.
- ✓Many everyday words resemble English ones.
- ✓Verb forms stay the same for every person.
- ✓Cases survive only in the genitive s and in pronouns, much as in English.
- ✗Plural endings fall into several groups and must be learned with each noun.
- ✗The verb-second rule runs against English word order.
- ✗False friends lead English speakers astray.
False friends are words that look like English words but mean something else.
| Swedish | Meaning | Not to be confused with |
|---|---|---|
| fart | speed | fart |
| gift | married, or poison | gift |
| glass | ice cream | glass |
| eventuellt | possibly | eventually |
| barn | child | barn |
8 types of online Swedish courses compared
Many Swedish learners are preparing a move or a new job, and course offers reflect that. Eight course types are common.
| Course type | Who it suits | Typical content |
|---|---|---|
| General Swedish | Beginners and intermediate learners | Grammar, vocabulary, all four skills |
| Conversation | Learners from A2 | Daily life, work, leisure |
| Relocation and integration | People preparing a move | Housing, authorities, schools, healthcare |
| Business Swedish | Professionals from B1 | Meetings, emails, negotiations |
| Specialised Swedish | Healthcare, engineering, IT | Terminology and typical conversations |
| University preparation | Degree applicants | Academic texts, Tisus preparation |
| Exam preparation | Candidates | Swedex until 2026, Tisus, YKI |
| AI courses and apps | Self-learners | Vocabulary, pronunciation, chat practice |
Each type comes as a live group class by video call, as one-to-one lessons, as a distance course with a tutor or as an app. Folkuniversitetet, a Swedish adult education association, runs live video courses at several levels, for example. AI apps train vocabulary and use speech recognition to check vowel length and the sj-sound. For pitch accent and free speaking, a teacher gives more reliable feedback.
Swedex ends in 2026, Tisus and YKI remain
Few certificates exist for Swedish as a foreign language, and the best known one disappears in 2026.
| Proof | Levels | Provider | Typical purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swedex | A2 to C1 | Folkuniversitetet | General proof, only until end of 2026 |
| Tisus | University readiness | Stockholm University | Degrees in Sweden, citizenship |
| YKI Swedish | Basic, intermediate, advanced | Finnish National Agency for Education | Work and citizenship in Finland |
1 Swedex
Swedex tests Swedish as a foreign language at CEFR levels A2, B1, B2 and C1. The CEFR is the Common European Framework of Reference with six levels from A1 to C2. Folkuniversitetet offers two versions, one test for A2 and B1 and one for B2 and C1. According to Folkuniversitetet, it will no longer be possible to take Swedex from 31 December 2026. Resits of single parts must also happen by that date.
2 Tisus
Tisus (Test i svenska för universitets- och högskolestudier) is the Swedish test for university study in Sweden. Stockholm University runs it twice a year in six Swedish cities and at about 70 locations abroad. Tisus tests reading, writing and speaking. It is not linked to the CEFR and matches the upper secondary school subject Swedish 3. A passed Tisus does not expire. According to Linköping University, it cost 2,380 Swedish kronor in Sweden and 2,875 kronor abroad in 2026.
3 YKI in Finland
The Finnish National Agency for Education offers the YKI test, a national language exam that includes Swedish. It has a basic, an intermediate and an advanced level and assesses listening, speaking, reading and writing separately.
4 Swedish citizenship
Since 6 June 2026 Sweden has required knowledge of Swedish for naturalisation. A dedicated language test does not exist yet, and its introduction has been postponed. The Swedish Migration Agency accepts, among other proof, the highest SFI course (Swedish for immigrants), school grades in Swedish and a Tisus result.
If you need a Swedish certificate in 2027 or later, plan with Tisus, with YKI in Finland or with courses in Sweden. Before you register, check which proof your university, employer or authority requires.
Swedish for studying and working in Sweden
Many master's programmes in Sweden are taught in English, while most bachelor's programmes are taught in Swedish. For a degree taught in Swedish you need Swedish at the level of the school subject Swedish 3. Applicants with a foreign school diploma usually prove this with Tisus. Degrees at public universities are tuition-free for students from the EU, the EEA and Switzerland, while other international students pay fees.
At work, the field decides. In international corporations and research, English is often enough at first. In healthcare, schools, public administration, trades and customer-facing roles, employers generally expect good Swedish.
If you are registered as a resident in Sweden, you can attend SFI. SFI (svenska för invandrare) is free Swedish tuition for immigrants, run by the municipalities. An online course before the move gives you a head start, because you then join SFI at a higher stage.
- An online course before the move makes flat hunting, paperwork and the first weeks at work easier.
- With Swedish at B1 you start SFI at a higher stage.
- Swedish also opens doors to jobs in Norway and Denmark.
What an online Swedish course costs
An online Swedish course costs anywhere from nothing to about 50 USD or EUR per hour, depending on the format. Swedish teachers are scarcer than teachers of English or Spanish, so prices run somewhat higher. The ranges are rough guide values from typical offers in 2026, not survey data.
| Format | Price (approx.) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Language app subscription | 0 to 15 per month | Vocabulary, daily routine |
| Online group class | 10 to 25 per hour | Steady progress from A1 to B2 |
| One-to-one lessons | 20 to 50 per hour | Pronunciation, specialised Swedish, Tisus |
| Intensive pre-move course | 400 to 1,200 per course | Fast start in daily life |
Two one-to-one lessons a week at 30 per hour cost 2,400 a year over 40 teaching weeks. A group class with the same hours at 15 per hour costs half as much.
University language centres and continuing education programmes in many countries teach Swedish, often online. If a Swedish employer has offered you a job, ask whether it pays for a language course before you book one yourself.
8 questions to ask before booking a Swedish course
These eight questions show whether a Swedish course covers pronunciation, your exam goal and the timetable of your move.
- Is the teacher trained in teaching Swedish as a foreign language?
- Does the provider place you on the CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference with levels A1 to C2?
- Does the course practise pitch accent and the sj-sound in a targeted way?
- How much speaking time do you get per lesson?
- Does the course prepare you for Tisus or YKI, if you need proof?
- Does the course offer vocabulary for your profession, such as healthcare or engineering?
- Do the class times suit your time zone and working day?
- What are the cancellation terms, and do prepaid lessons expire?
Courses that still advertise a Swedex certificate in 2026 should state when the exam takes place. From 31 December 2026, Swedex can no longer be taken.
Frequently asked questions about online Swedish courses
How long does it take to learn Swedish to a professional level?
Swedish takes about 24 weeks of full-time study, or roughly 550 class hours, to reach professional working proficiency, according to the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the US Department of State. That places Swedish in the group that takes the least time. Part-time learners need several years.
Can I still take the Swedex Swedish exam after 2026?
The Swedex Swedish exam can no longer be taken from 31 December 2026, according to Folkuniversitetet. Resits of single parts must also happen by that date. After that, Tisus for university study in Sweden and the YKI test in Finland remain.
Which Swedish certificate do I need for a degree in Sweden?
A degree taught in Swedish requires Swedish at the level of the school subject Swedish 3. Applicants with a foreign school diploma usually prove this with Tisus, which Stockholm University runs twice a year. Programmes taught in English need no proof of Swedish.
Do I need Swedish for Swedish citizenship?
Swedish citizenship has required knowledge of Swedish since 6 June 2026. The planned dedicated language test has been postponed. The Swedish Migration Agency accepts, among other proof, the highest SFI course, school grades in Swedish and a Tisus result.
Can Swedish speakers understand Norwegian and Danish?
Swedish speakers understand much of written Norwegian and Danish, because the three languages are closely related. Spoken Norwegian is usually easier to follow than spoken Danish. An online Swedish course therefore also opens doors in Norway and Denmark.
What is the sj-sound in Swedish?
The sj-sound in Swedish is a breathy fricative with no English equivalent. It appears in words such as sju (seven) and sjuk (ill) and in sk before front vowels, as in skön (lovely). Teachers usually train it through repetition and recordings.
How much do online one-to-one Swedish lessons cost?
Online one-to-one Swedish lessons cost about 20 to 50 USD or EUR per hour as of 2026. Swedish teachers are scarcer than teachers of English or Spanish, which pushes prices up. Group classes cost about half as much per hour.
Is SFI in Sweden free of charge?
SFI (svenska för invandrare) is the free Swedish tuition that Swedish municipalities offer to immigrants registered as residents. The highest SFI course also counts as proof of Swedish for citizenship. An online course before the move lets you start SFI at a higher stage.
