Hindi has no widely recognised standard test

For English, French, Spanish or German, a few large exam systems dominate, such as IELTS, DELF, DELE or the Goethe-Zertifikat. Hindi has no counterpart. No exam for Hindi is linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), the six-level scale from A1 to C2, and recognised by universities, employers and authorities worldwide.

The reason lies in demand and funding. Standard tests pay for themselves through exam fees from large numbers of candidates, often because universities or visa offices require them, and national cultural institutes support them. Hindi is rarely an admission or visa requirement outside India, so no comparable system has grown.

What exists instead are five kinds of proof, each built for a narrow purpose: a speaking interview from the US, a school qualification from Cambridge, university module exams, certificates from India's Central Institute of Hindi and your own self-assessment.

💡

Ask the employer, university or school which proof it accepts before you book any Hindi test preparation. The answer decides the course, the timeline and the cost.

5 kinds of Hindi proof compared

Each kind of proof answers a different question, from how well you speak to which course you completed.

The ACTFL OPI is the Oral Proficiency Interview of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. The Kendriya Hindi Sansthan is the Central Institute of Hindi in Agra, which belongs to India's Ministry of Education. The CEFR is the European six-level scale from A1 to C2.

ℹ️

The OPI and the IGCSE are set by exam bodies that did not teach you. Universities and the Kendriya Hindi Sansthan test the learners they taught, and a self-assessment is not tested at all.

Which Hindi proof fits a job, a degree or school

The right proof follows from the goal and from what the recipient asks for.

GoalProof that fitsWhat to check
Job with a US employer or agencyACTFL OPIthe rating the employer requires
Job in Europe or the UKCEFR self-assessment plus OPI or course certificatewhether the employer wants an external result
Degree or researchuniversity module examcredits and grade at your university
Pupil at an international schoolCambridge IGCSE Hindi as a Second Languagewhether the school offers syllabus 0549
Structured Hindi study in Indiaprogramme at the Kendriya Hindi Sansthanapplication deadlines through the embassy

For a CV in Europe, a CEFR level per skill is the common format. The CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference, rates listening, reading, speaking and writing separately. Add the number of teaching hours and the type of assessment, so an employer sees what stands behind the level.

⚠️

Online providers sometimes issue their own Hindi certificate with a CEFR level. Such a certificate shows attendance and the provider's own test, not an external result.

Preparing online for the ACTFL OPI in Hindi

The ACTFL OPI is a speaking test in which a certified tester talks with you in Hindi by phone for 15 to 30 minutes while a webcam supervises the session. ACTFL, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, rates the result on a scale from Novice to Superior.

Online preparation suits the OPI well, because the test itself is a conversation at a distance. A Hindi teacher can run mock interviews by phone or video and train five skills.

  1. Talking without visual cues, since the tester only hears you.
  2. Telling past events, including the past tense with ne, where the verb agrees with the object.
  3. Describing places and processes in connected sentences.
  4. Giving and defending opinions on familiar topics.
  5. Staying in Hindi when a word is missing, by paraphrasing, because the tester rates what you can say in Hindi.
💡

Record every mock interview. Listening back shows where you switch into English, drop aspirated sounds or lose gender agreement.

Preparing for Cambridge IGCSE Hindi as a Second Language

Cambridge IGCSE Hindi as a Second Language (syllabus 0549) is a school qualification from Cambridge International. According to Cambridge, it is meant for learners who already have a working knowledge of Hindi and whose first language is not Hindi. Two components are compulsory: a two-hour Reading and Writing paper and a Listening paper of about 35 to 45 minutes. An optional third component, a Speaking test of about 10 to 12 minutes, is still available. It is separately endorsed with a grade from 1 to 5 and does not count towards the overall qualification grade.

Candidates enter through a school or exam centre registered with Cambridge. Cambridge is revising the syllabus for the exams from 2027 to 2029: the optional Speaking component will be removed, and the Listening paper will be made up entirely of multiple-choice questions. The current syllabus, with its optional Speaking component, still applies for exams up to 2026. Check which syllabus year applies to your exam date, because the syllabus year is the year in which the exam is taken.

Online preparation for the IGCSE works best with three elements.

  • Past papers and the syllabus document, worked through under time limits.
  • Writing practice in Devanagari with corrections from a teacher.
  • Listening practice with recordings of standard Hindi at natural speed.
ℹ️

The IGCSE suits heritage learners who grew up with Hindi but have English as their first language. They often understand well and need training in reading and writing.

University exams and Agra certificates as Hindi proof

University module exams are the usual proof in South Asian studies. Heidelberg University's South Asia Institute in Germany, for example, runs small intensive courses in Hindi, Bengali and Urdu. A passed module with a grade and credits is solid proof, even without a CEFR level. Online private lessons help with the parts that university courses cover quickly, such as dictation, reading speed and speaking.

The Kendriya Hindi Sansthan in Agra, India's Central Institute of Hindi, runs programmes for foreign learners on site and awards certificates and diplomas. Applications go through Indian embassies. Online lessons before the stay help you arrive with Devanagari and basic conversation in place.

👍 Advantages
  • ✓A university exam brings credits and a grade that other universities recognise.
  • ✓An Agra certificate documents months of structured Hindi study in India.
👎 Drawbacks
  • ✗University exams are open only to enrolled students.
  • ✗The Agra programme requires a stay in India and an application months in advance.

Frequently asked questions about online Hindi test preparation courses

Is there an internationally recognised standard test for Hindi?

No, Hindi has no internationally recognised standard test comparable to IELTS for English or DELE for Spanish. Hindi learners use the ACTFL OPI speaking interview, Cambridge IGCSE Hindi as a Second Language, university module exams, certificates of the Kendriya Hindi Sansthan in Agra or a CEFR self-assessment. Which one counts depends on the employer, university or school.

How do you prepare for the ACTFL OPI speaking interview in Hindi?

You prepare for the ACTFL OPI in Hindi with mock interviews by phone or video, ideally recorded. Practise telling past events with the ne construction, describing processes and defending opinions without switching into English. The OPI itself is a 15- to 30-minute phone conversation rated from Novice to Superior.

What does Cambridge IGCSE Hindi as a Second Language test?

Cambridge IGCSE Hindi as a Second Language (0549) tests reading, writing and listening in two compulsory components. Cambridge describes it as a qualification for learners who already have a working knowledge of Hindi and whose first language is not Hindi. An optional Speaking component is still available for exams up to 2026, separately graded and excluded from the overall result; Cambridge will remove it for the exams from 2027 to 2029.

Which Hindi proof do employers accept without a standard test?

Employers accept Hindi proof such as an ACTFL OPI rating, a university module exam or a CEFR self-assessment with teaching hours, since no standard Hindi test exists. US employers use OPI ratings most. In Europe, a CEFR level per skill on the CV is common.

Can an online Hindi course issue an official Hindi certificate?

An online Hindi course can issue its own certificate, but it is not an official Hindi exam result. Such a certificate shows attendance, hours and the provider's own assessment. For external proof, Hindi learners use the ACTFL OPI, Cambridge IGCSE Hindi or a university exam.

Who awards Hindi certificates in India to foreign learners?

The Kendriya Hindi Sansthan, the Central Institute of Hindi in Agra under India's Ministry of Education, awards Hindi certificates and diplomas to foreign learners. They follow an on-site programme in Agra. Applications go through Indian embassies.
