Bengali in Bangladesh, India and the diaspora

Bengali, called Bangla in the language itself, is the state language of Bangladesh. The country counted about 170 million people in its 2022 census, and the vast majority speak Bengali as their mother tongue. In India's 2011 census, about 97 million people named Bengali as their mother tongue, making it the second-largest language in India after Hindi. It is the official language of the states of West Bengal and Tripura. Across both countries, well over 200 million people speak Bengali natively.

Large Bengali-speaking communities also live in the United Kingdom, especially in East London, and in New York, Italy and the Gulf states.

ℹ️

Since 2000, 21 February has been UNESCO's International Mother Language Day. The initiative came from Bangladesh. It recalls 21 February 1952, when police in Dhaka opened fire on students demanding Bengali as a state language of what was then Pakistan.

Study time for Bengali up to professional level

The Foreign Service Institute (FSI), the language school of the US State Department, places Bengali in the third of its four difficulty categories. It estimates about 44 weeks of full-time study with 1,012 classroom hours. The target is level 3 on the ILR scale, a US government scale from 0 to 5 on which level 3 means confident professional use.

1,012

Full-time duration

17 hours
Self-study per week

The FSI figures describe native English speakers, so they apply directly to English-speaking readers. Two things save time: like English, Bengali has no grammatical gender, and its verbs follow clear patterns. Two things cost time: a spelling system with several letters for the same sound, and a vocabulary with few links to European languages.

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) describes ability on six levels from A1 to C2. No official hour counts per CEFR level exist for Bengali. The hours in the table are rough estimates for class plus self-study, derived from the FSI figures.

GoalCEFR levelStudy hours (rough estimate)
Read the script, introduce yourself, shopA1120 to 180
Chat with family and colleaguesA2250 to 350
Handle daily life in Dhaka or Kolkata aloneB1450 to 650
Follow newspapers and meetingsB2800 to 1,100

At five hours a week, you reach A2 in about a year. Heritage learners who already understand spoken Bengali often progress faster, because their work focuses on script and formal vocabulary.

The Bengali script and its pronunciation

The Bengali script is related to Devanagari, the script of Hindi. It runs from left to right, and most letters hang from a horizontal line along the top of the word. Assamese uses the same script with small differences. Every consonant carries a built-in vowel that sounds like the o in hot. কলম (pen) is pronounced kolom, while the same word in Hindi is kalam.

The spelling preserves the Sanskrit origins of many words. As a result, several letters stand for the same sound.

FeatureExampleWhy it takes time
Three letters for shশ, ষ, সSame sound, different spellings
Two letters for nন, ণYou learn the spelling word by word
Aspirated consonantsকাল kal (yesterday, tomorrow), খাল khal (canal)A puff of air changes the word
Conjunct consonantsক্ষ in পরীক্ষা porikkha (exam)The shape hides its parts

Pronunciation is manageable for English speakers. The main hurdles are the pairs of aspirated and unaspirated consonants and the retroflex sounds, made with the tongue tip curled back. English already adds a puff of air to p, t and k at the start of a word, as in pin. In Bengali you have to drop that puff on purpose for the unaspirated letters.

💡

Learn the Bengali script from the first week. Romanised Bengali is especially inconsistent, and conjunct consonants need many weeks of practice.

4 features of Bengali grammar

1 No grammatical gender

Bengali nouns are neither masculine nor feminine. Verbs and adjectives stay the same whether a man or a woman speaks, and the pronoun se means both he and she. For English speakers this feels natural, and it removes a large block of work that Hindi learners face.

2 Verbs by person and politeness

The verb changes with the person and with the level of politeness, but not with number. Ami jai means I go, amra jai means we go. For you there are three levels: tui (very intimate), tumi (familiar) and apni (polite). He and she also have a polite form, tini instead of se.

3 Classifiers instead of articles

Bengali has no articles. It attaches classifiers instead. Ekṭa boi means a book, boiṭa the book, boigulo the books. The ending ṭa or ṭi makes a noun definite.

4 Verb last, negation after it

The verb comes at the end of the sentence, and na (not) usually follows it. আমি ভাত খাই না (ami bhat khai na) means 'I don't eat rice', literally 'I rice eat not'. In the present tense the verb to be often disappears: ami chhatro means I am a student.

✅

Without gender, English speakers skip the hardest memorisation task of many languages.

Most verbs form their tenses with fixed patterns.

Bengali in Bangladesh and West Bengal compared

Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal, with its capital Kolkata, share the same written standard. The differences show up in everyday vocabulary, greetings and accent. Many of them follow religion: most people in Bangladesh are Muslim, and most in West Bengal are Hindu.

MeaningBangladeshWest Bengal
Waterpanijol
GreetingAssalamu alaikumNomoshkar
Bathgosolsnan
Uncle (father's brother)chachakaka

Historically, Bengali had two registers. Sadhu bhasha is an older, formal literary style with long verb forms. Cholito bhasha is today's standard for writing and speech, and courses teach it. You meet sadhu bhasha in older literature and some legal texts.

Strong dialects exist next to the standard. Sylheti from north-east Bangladesh and Chittagonian from the south-east differ so much that some linguists count them as separate languages. Most British Bangladeshis trace their roots to the Sylhet region. Heritage learners from these families often grew up with Sylheti and learn standard Bengali almost as a new variety.

💡

Choose the variety that fits your goal. For work in Bangladesh, pick a teacher from Bangladesh. For Kolkata, cinema and classic literature, pick a teacher from West Bengal. The written language stays the same either way.

Which online courses exist for Bengali?

The choice of Bengali courses is smaller than for Hindi. Most learners take private video lessons, because fixed group courses are rare.

Course typeAvailabilitySuits
Private video lessonswide, many teachers in Bangladesh and Indiaall levels and goals
Online group courserarebeginners who want a fixed rhythm
University coursesome universities with South Asian studiesstudents and auditors
On-site course in DhakaInstitute of Modern Languages, University of Dhakalearners living there
App or AI tutorlimitedscript and vocabulary

Heidelberg University's South Asia Institute in Germany teaches Bengali in small intensive courses. The University of Dhaka runs one-year Bangla courses of 120 hours each, open only to foreigners.

AI tutors are programs that simulate conversation and score pronunciation with speech recognition. Test any AI tutor with the pair kal and khal. If it cannot hear the puff of air, it cannot train your Bengali pronunciation.

Private lessons are the most common format for Bengali, with clear strengths and weaknesses:

👍 Advantages
  • ✓You choose a teacher from Bangladesh or West Bengal on purpose.
  • ✓Pace and content follow your own goal.
👎 Drawbacks
  • ✗Without a group you have no fellow learners to practise with.
  • ✗Quality varies widely, because many teachers lack formal training.
7

How can you prove your Bengali level?

Bengali has no worldwide standard exam. Four kinds of proof are common.

ProofIssued byWeight
CEFR self-assessmentyou, using the Council of Europe gridcommon on CVs
University examuniversities with South Asian studieshigh, with grade and credits
ACTFL OPILanguage Testing International (USA)high, especially in the US
Course certificateUniversity of Dhaka, schools, online providersmedium, depends on hours and testing

CEFR self-assessment

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) describes ability on six levels from A1 to C2. With the self-assessment grid from the Council of Europe and Europass, you place yourself separately for listening, reading, speaking and writing.

ACTFL OPI

The OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) is a speaking test from ACTFL, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. A certified tester holds a 15- to 30-minute phone conversation with you in Bengali while a webcam proctors the session. Ratings run from Novice to Superior.

University of Dhaka courses

The Institute of Modern Languages at the University of Dhaka teaches Bangla to foreigners only, in one-year courses of 120 hours each. A certificate from this institute shows structured training at a public university.

💡

Strong proof of Bengali names the CEFR level per skill, the teaching hours, the type of assessment and the variety, Bangladesh or West Bengal.

8

How much do online Bengali courses cost?

Prices depend mainly on where the teacher lives and on the format.

FormatPrice (approx., 2026)Note
Private lessons via tutor platformsUS$10 to 35 per hourteachers in Bangladesh are often the cheapest
Online group courseUS$150 to 450 per levelrarely offered
University coursevaries widelyoften included in tuition for enrolled students
App or self-study materialUS$0 to 15 per monthsmall selection

A sample calculation: one private lesson a week at US$20 costs about US$520 over six months. Together with self-study, that covers the script and the basics of level A1 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR, the scale from A1 to C2).

ℹ️

Bangladesh uses UTC+6 all year. It is 6 hours ahead of London in winter and 5 hours in summer, and 11 or 10 hours ahead of New York. Kolkata is half an hour behind Bangladesh. Early-morning lessons in North America and morning lessons in Europe fall into Bangladeshi afternoon or evening.

7 checks before you book a Bengali course

  1. The course teaches the Bengali script from the start.
  2. The teacher states whether they teach the Bengali of Bangladesh or of West Bengal.
  3. The course teaches the standard cholito bhasha and explains dialect forms separately.
  4. The course sets goals in levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the scale from A1 to C2.
  5. The provider offers a trial lesson.
  6. Lesson times fit the time difference with Bangladesh or India.
  7. The course measures progress with tests, dictations or recordings.
⚠️

Many learners rely on romanisation too long and later struggle with spelling.

Heritage learners carry forms of the Sylheti dialect into standard Bengali without noticing.

Some learners use tui with strangers and sound rude.

Bengali films, Tagore songs, news and language-exchange partners support any course. Short daily sessions help more with script and spelling than one long session a week.

10

Bengali for work, study and literature

Bengali has one of the richest literatures in South Asia. In 1913 Rabindranath Tagore became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. He also wrote, in Bengali, the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh. The director Satyajit Ray made his best-known films in Bengali.

Fields that need Bengali

  • Fashion and textile companies need staff who talk directly with factories in Bangladesh.
  • Development and aid organisations work across Bangladesh and West Bengal.
  • Climate and disaster research works with partners in the Ganges delta.
  • Public services, schools and interpreting agencies in the UK and US serve Bengali-speaking communities.

At university, Bengali belongs to South Asian studies, and some universities, such as Heidelberg in Germany, teach it in intensive courses.

Realistic targets on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR, levels A1 to C2) look like this. Talks with suppliers and partners need A2 to B1. Negotiating in Bengali needs B2. Reading Tagore in the original takes roughly C1, because his language contains many formal and older forms.

Frequently asked questions about online Bengali courses

How long does it take to learn Bengali?

Bengali takes about 44 weeks of full-time study to reach confident professional use, according to the US Foreign Service Institute. For simple conversations at CEFR level A2, plan roughly 250 to 350 study hours. At five hours a week, that is about a year.

How does learning Bengali differ from learning Hindi?

Bengali, unlike Hindi, has no grammatical gender, which makes its grammar much simpler. Bengali spelling, however, is less regular, because several letters stand for the same sound. The built-in vowel of the script sounds like o in Bengali and like a in Hindi.

Does the Bengali of Bangladesh differ from the Bengali of West Bengal?

The Bengali of Bangladesh and of West Bengal shares one written standard. Differences appear in everyday vocabulary, greetings and accent, such as pani and jol for water. Speakers from both regions understand each other without difficulty.

Is there an official certificate for Bengali?

No worldwide official certificate exists for Bengali. Learners use university exams, the ACTFL OPI speaking interview, certificates from the University of Dhaka and a CEFR self-assessment. Strong proof names the level, the teaching hours and the issuing body.

What is the difference between Bengali and Sylheti?

Sylheti is a variety from the Sylhet region of north-east Bangladesh that differs strongly from standard Bengali. Some linguists count Sylheti as a separate language. Many British Bangladeshis speak Sylheti at home and learn standard Bengali in classes.

How much do private online Bengali lessons cost?

Private online Bengali lessons cost roughly US$10 to 35 per hour as of 2026. Teachers based in Bangladesh are usually the cheapest. A trial lesson helps you check the teacher's quality and variety.

Why is 21 February important for the Bengali language?

21 February marks the day in 1952 when police in Dhaka opened fire on students demanding Bengali as a state language of then Pakistan. At Bangladesh's initiative, UNESCO approved International Mother Language Day on that date in 1999. It has been observed worldwide since 2000.

Are Bangla and Bengali the same language?

Bangla and Bengali are two names for the same language. Bangla is the name in the language itself, and Bengali is the traditional English name. Both names are common in English today.
