Bengali as a subject in South Asian studies

At universities outside South Asia, Bengali is usually a subject within South Asian studies. Heidelberg University's South Asia Institute in Germany, for example, teaches Bengali in small intensive courses alongside Hindi and Urdu. Students learn the language from scratch together with the history, literature and politics of the region.

Bengali also serves as a research language. It matters for literature, since Rabindranath Tagore wrote in Bengali and in 1913 became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. It matters for film studies, since Satyajit Ray made his best-known films in Bengali, and for history, development and climate research on Bangladesh and the Ganges delta.

Study goalRole of BengaliTypical target level
Degree in South Asian studiescompulsory or elective languageB1 to B2 by the end of the degree
Research on Bangladesh or West Bengalsources, newspapers, interviewsB2 for newspapers and meetings

The levels follow the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a scale from A1 to C2. They are guide values, since no Bengali-specific requirement exists.

ℹ️

Tagore's language contains many formal and older forms. That is why reading him in the original takes roughly C1, the fifth of the six CEFR levels.

Learning Bangla at the University of Dhaka

The Institute of Modern Languages at the University of Dhaka teaches Bangla to foreigners only. Its courses last one year and comprise 120 hours each, and they take place on site in Dhaka. A certificate from this institute shows structured training at a public university.

For degree programmes at universities in Bangladesh or India, check the language of instruction of each programme before you apply. The university sets its own language requirements, and no national Bengali admission test for foreigners exists.

Bangladesh uses UTC+6 all year, and Kolkata is half an hour behind. Online lessons with teachers in Dhaka fit European mornings and North American evenings.

💡

Arrive in Dhaka with the Bengali script and A2 in place. The 120 hours of a one-year course then go into conversation and reading instead of the alphabet.

How universities check Bengali skills without a test

Bengali has no worldwide standard test comparable to IELTS for English or DELE for Spanish. Universities therefore work with other proof.

  • Placement at the start: language departments place students with prior knowledge by interview or their own placement test.
  • Module exams: a passed Bengali module with a grade and credits counts as solid proof at other universities, even without a CEFR level.
  • ACTFL OPI: the Oral Proficiency Interview of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages is a 15- to 30-minute speaking test by phone with a certified tester, rated from Novice to Superior.
  • University of Dhaka certificate: proof of a one-year, 120-hour Bangla course for foreigners.
  • School qualifications: applicants who took the AQA GCSE in Bengali, the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Bangla or the Cambridge O Level in Bengali can show it.
⚠️

A course certificate from an online provider only confirms attendance and hours.

A CEFR self-assessment is not tested, so universities weigh it less than an exam.

Academic Bengali in cholito bhasha with formal vocabulary

Modern academic Bengali is written in cholito bhasha, today's standard for writing and speech. Its formal register uses many words of Sanskrit origin, such as গবেষণা gobeshona (research), বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় bishwobiddaloy (university) and প্রবন্ধ probondho (essay, article).

Older literature, older scholarship and some legal texts use sadhu bhasha, a formal literary style with long verb forms. Historians and literary scholars need to read it.

MeaningCholito bhasha (today)Sadhu bhasha (older texts)
I had donekorechhilamkoriyachhilam
having donekorekoriya

Three conventions matter when you write.

1 Punctuation

A Bengali sentence ends with the dari, a vertical stroke (।), instead of a full stop.

2 Spelling

Several letters stand for the same sound, such as the three letters for sh. Spelling mistakes stand out more in a thesis than in a chat, so plan dictation even at advanced levels.

3 Romanisation in papers written in English

Papers about Bengali cite words in the Bengali script or in a fixed transliteration scheme, such as ISO 15919 or the Library of Congress tables.

ℹ️

Ask your department which transliteration scheme it expects before the first term paper.

5 steps to prepare Bengali for a degree or research

Bengali needs a long lead time for academic use. Rough estimates derived from the US Foreign Service Institute put B1 at 450 to 650 study hours and B2 at 800 to 1,100 hours, lessons and self-study together.

  1. Learn the script first. Conjunct consonants, two or more letters merged into one shape, need many weeks of practice.
  2. Choose the variety by the research region. A teacher from Bangladesh fits work in Bangladesh, a teacher from West Bengal fits Kolkata, film and classic literature.
  3. Reach A2 before a stay. At A2, the second of the six CEFR levels, you handle shops, transport and simple talk.
  4. Plan B2 for newspapers and meetings. Sources from the press and interviews with officials need this level.
  5. Prepare for dialects before fieldwork. Sylheti in north-east Bangladesh and Chittagonian in the south-east differ so strongly that some linguists count them as separate languages.
💡

For literature, add sadhu bhasha to your reading list from B2. Older texts use it throughout, and reading speed grows only with practice.

Online Bengali courses that fit a degree

Enrolled students often take Bengali at their university, where the course is usually included in tuition. Online private lessons add what the degree course leaves out, such as reading training for your research topic or speaking practice in the variety of your fieldwork region. Private online Bengali lessons cost roughly US$10 to 35 per hour as of 2026, and teachers based in Bangladesh are usually the cheapest.

👍 Advantages
  • ✓A university course follows the syllabus and ends with a graded exam.
  • ✓Online private lessons adapt to your sources, your variety and your schedule.
👎 Drawbacks
  • ✗Only some universities offer Bengali courses.
  • ✗Online private lessons give no credits and no graded proof.

A private teacher can also prepare you for reading Tagore or older sadhu bhasha texts, which general courses rarely reach.

Frequently asked questions about online Bengali courses for university

Do you need a Bengali certificate to study Bengali at a university?

You need no Bengali certificate to start studying Bengali at a university, because degree courses in South Asian studies usually teach it from beginner level. Language departments place students with prior knowledge by interview or their own test. Programmes taught in Bengali set their own entry level.

Which Bengali level do you need to read Tagore in the original?

Reading Tagore in the original takes roughly C1 in Bengali, the fifth of the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference. His language contains many formal and older forms. Rough estimates put B2 alone at 800 to 1,100 study hours from zero.

Where can foreigners learn Bengali at a university in Bangladesh?

Foreigners can learn Bengali at the Institute of Modern Languages of the University of Dhaka, which teaches Bangla to foreigners only. Its courses last one year and comprise 120 hours each, taught on site in Dhaka. The certificate shows structured training at a public university.

How does academic Bengali differ from everyday Bengali?

Academic Bengali uses the same standard, cholito bhasha, as everyday Bengali but many more words of Sanskrit origin, such as gobeshona for research. Older academic and literary texts also use sadhu bhasha, with long verb forms such as koriyachhilam instead of korechhilam. Sentences end with the dari (।).

When do researchers need to read sadhu bhasha in Bengali?

Researchers need to read sadhu bhasha in Bengali when they work with older literature, older scholarship or some legal texts. Sadhu bhasha is a formal literary style with long verb forms that cholito bhasha replaced as the standard. Courses teach cholito bhasha, so researchers add sadhu bhasha separately.

How do universities check Bengali skills without a standard Bengali test?

Universities check Bengali skills with module exams, placement interviews, the ACTFL OPI speaking test and certificates such as that of the University of Dhaka, because no standard Bengali test exists. School qualifications such as the GCSE in Bengali also count as evidence. A passed module with a grade and credits is solid proof.
