Where is Hindi spoken and who learns it?
Hindi is an official language of India's central government, alongside English. In the 2011 census, about 528 million people in India gave Hindi as their mother tongue, 43.6 percent of the population. Counting second and third languages, the same census shows more than half of the country speaking Hindi.
Hindi dominates daily life in the north and centre of India, in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, and in the capital Delhi. In the south and east, people speak their own languages, such as Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or Bengali, and English often serves as the shared language between strangers. Large Hindi-speaking communities also live in the UK, the US, Canada, the Gulf states and Fiji.
Hindi and Urdu share their grammar and core vocabulary. A Hindi speaker understands most everyday spoken Urdu from Pakistan. The two languages differ in script and in formal vocabulary: Hindi uses Devanagari and borrows learned words from Sanskrit, while Urdu uses a Perso-Arabic script and borrows from Persian and Arabic.
Who learns Hindi online
- Managers and engineers learn Hindi for clients and plants in northern India.
- Aid workers need Hindi for field work.
- Students of South Asian studies take Hindi as a required or elective language.
- Heritage learners grew up hearing Hindi at home and want to read and write it.
- Partners of Hindi speakers want to talk with the wider family.
Some Hindi words already sit in English: bungalow, shampoo, jungle and pyjamas all came from Hindi or Hindustani.
How long does it take to learn Hindi?
The Foreign Service Institute (FSI), the language school of the US State Department, places Hindi in the third of its four difficulty categories. For this group it estimates about 44 weeks and 1,012 classroom hours. The target is level 3 on the ILR scale, a US government scale from 0 to 5 on which level 3 means confident professional use. A typical FSI week combines 23 hours of class with 17 hours of self-study.
The FSI figures describe native English speakers learning full time in small groups, so they apply directly to English-speaking readers.
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) describes language ability on six levels from A1 to C2. No official hour counts per CEFR level exist for Hindi. The hours in the table are rough estimates for class plus self-study, derived from the FSI figures.
| CEFR level | What you can do in Hindi | Study hours (rough estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | introduce yourself, shop, read the Hindi script slowly | 120 to 180 |
| A2 | hold simple talks about family, work and travel | 250 to 350 |
| B1 | handle daily life alone, follow simple news | 450 to 650 |
| B2 | follow meetings, understand most films without subtitles | 800 to 1,100 |
If you study five hours a week alongside a job, you reach A2 in about a year. With ten hours a week, B1 is realistic after one to one and a half years.
Devanagari script and Hindi pronunciation
Hindi is written in Devanagari, the same script used for Sanskrit, Marathi and Nepali. Devanagari runs from left to right, and its letters hang from a horizontal line drawn along the top of each word. Every consonant carries a built-in vowel a. Other vowels appear as small marks placed before, after, on top of or under the consonant.
Many learners read slowly but accurately after three to six weeks of regular practice. Spelling follows pronunciation far more closely than in English. One rule confuses beginners: the built-in a usually drops at the end of a word and often in the middle. कमल (lotus) is therefore pronounced kamal and not kamala.
Learn Devanagari in the first weeks of your Hindi course. Romanised spellings are inconsistent and hide exactly the sounds that separate Hindi from English.
| Feature | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Aspirated and unaspirated consonants | पल pal (moment), फल phal (fruit) | A puff of air changes the word |
| Retroflex sounds made with the tongue tip curled back | ट ṭ in टमाटर ṭamāṭar (tomato) | English has no contrast between this ṭ and a dental t |
| Short and long vowels | कल kal (yesterday, tomorrow), काल kāl (time) | Vowel length changes the meaning |
| Nasal vowels | हाँ (yes) | The vowel sounds through the nose |
English speakers already add a puff of air to p, t and k at the start of a word, as in pin. In English that puff carries no meaning. In Hindi you must learn to drop it on purpose, or listeners hear phal when you mean pal.
5 Hindi grammar hurdles for English speakers
1 The verb comes last
Hindi places the verb at the end of the sentence. मैं घर जाता हूँ (main ghar jātā hū̃) means 'I go home', literally 'I home going am'. Instead of prepositions, Hindi uses postpositions after the noun. घर में (ghar mẽ) means 'in the house', literally 'house in'.
2 Two genders that reach the verb
Every Hindi noun is masculine or feminine, a category English does not have. Gender changes adjectives and verbs, even when you talk about yourself. A man says main jātā hū̃ (I go), a woman says main jātī hū̃.
3 The ne construction in the past
In the completed past of verbs with an object, the subject takes the marker ne and the verb agrees with the object. Linguists call this pattern ergative. मैंने रोटी खाई (maine roṭī khāī, I ate the flatbread) ends in a feminine form because roṭī is feminine, whoever is speaking.
4 Three words for you
Hindi distinguishes tū (very intimate), tum (familiar) and āp (polite). English has one you, so this choice takes practice. Start with āp in class and at work, because tū sounds rude towards strangers.
5 Feelings and abilities with ko
Hindi expresses many states with the postposition ko. मुझे हिंदी आती है (mujhe hindī ātī hai) means 'I know Hindi', literally 'to me Hindi comes'.
Hindi has no articles, so you never choose between a and the.
Most verbs form their tenses regularly, with only a handful of irregular past forms.
6 types of online Hindi courses
| Course type | Who it suits | Typical scope |
|---|---|---|
| General Hindi group course | beginners who want a fixed rhythm | 1 to 2 sessions a week, 3 to 6 months per level |
| Private lessons by video | learners with their own goal or changing hours | booked flexibly, usually 45 to 60 minutes |
| Devanagari script course | anyone who wants to read and write | 2 to 6 weeks |
| Conversation course | learners with basic skills | 1 to 3 sessions a week |
| Business Hindi | professionals working with India | usually private lessons |
| App, self-study course or AI tutor | a supplement to lessons | 10 to 30 minutes a day |
Heritage learners form a group of their own. They grew up with Hindi in the family, understand much of it, but rarely read or write it. Heritage courses build on that listening skill and train script and formal vocabulary.
AI tutors are programs that simulate conversation and score your pronunciation with speech recognition. Test any AI tutor with the word pairs pal and phal or kal and kāl. If the program cannot hear the difference, it cannot train your Hindi pronunciation.
Live lessons with a teacher have clear strengths for Hindi and a few drawbacks:
- ✓The teacher immediately corrects aspirated sounds and sounds made with the tongue tip curled back.
- ✓You practise free speaking, follow-up questions and polite forms.
- ✗Fixed times have to fit the time difference with India.
- ✗Live lessons cost more per hour than an app.
How can you prove your Hindi level without a standard exam?
Hindi has no worldwide standard exam comparable to IELTS for English or DELF for French, so employers and universities accept five common kinds of proof.
| Proof | Issued by | Format |
|---|---|---|
| CEFR self-assessment | you, using the Council of Europe grid | level per skill on your CV |
| University exam | universities with South Asian studies | module exam with grade and credits |
| ACTFL OPI | Language Testing International (USA) | speaking interview by phone, 15 to 30 minutes |
| Hindi certificate or diploma | Kendriya Hindi Sansthan, Agra | award after an on-site programme |
| Course certificate | language school or online provider | attendance with level and hours |
CEFR self-assessment
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) describes ability on six levels from A1 to C2. The self-assessment grid published by the Council of Europe and Europass lets you place yourself separately for listening, reading, speaking and writing,.
University exams
Heidelberg University's South Asia Institute in Germany, for example, runs small intensive courses in Hindi, Bengali and Urdu. A passed module exam with a grade is solid proof, even when it carries no CEFR level.
ACTFL OPI
The OPI (Oral Proficiency Interview) is a speaking test from ACTFL, the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. A certified tester holds a 15- to 30-minute phone conversation with you in Hindi while a webcam proctors the session. Ratings run from Novice to Superior, and US employers and universities use them most.
Kendriya Hindi Sansthan
The Central Institute of Hindi in Agra belongs to India's Ministry of Education. It awards Hindi certificates and diplomas after an on-site programme, and applications run through Indian embassies.
Strong proof of Hindi names the CEFR level per skill, the number of teaching hours, the type of assessment and the issuing institution.
How much do online Hindi courses cost?
Prices for online Hindi courses depend on the format and on where the teacher lives.
| Format | Price (approx., 2026) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Private lessons via tutor platforms | US$10 to 40 per hour | teachers based in India often charge less |
| Live group course | US$150 to 500 per level | usually 20 to 40 teaching hours |
| University course | varies widely | often included in tuition for enrolled students |
| App or self-study course | US$0 to 15 per month | no substitute for speaking with people |
A sample calculation shows the scale. To reach A2 on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR, the scale from A1 to C2), you need roughly 250 to 350 study hours. Perhaps 100 of those are lessons. At US$20 per private lesson, that adds up to about US$2,000. Exam fees come on top.
India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 and has no daylight saving. India is 5.5 hours ahead of London in winter and 4.5 hours ahead in summer, and 10.5 or 9.5 hours ahead of New York. Morning lessons in Europe and evening lessons in North America fall into Indian daytime.
For a structured build-up of script and grammar, look for teaching experience with adults and course material with a clear progression.
8 checks before you book a Hindi course
- The course teaches the Devanagari script from the start and uses romanisation only as a support.
- The teacher consistently corrects aspirated sounds and retroflex sounds, made with the tongue tip curled back.
- The course states its goals in levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the scale from A1 to C2, or on another named scale.
- Explanations and materials are in a language you understand well.
- The course teaches standard Hindi and treats colloquial and film language separately.
- The provider offers a trial lesson or a refund period.
- Lesson times work with the time difference between you and the teacher.
- The course measures your progress with tests, recordings or a final assessment per skill.
Many learners stay with romanised Hindi too long and later read Devanagari only haltingly.
Learners who only copy film dialogue pick up slang and few polite forms.
Some learners use tū with strangers and sound rude without noticing.
A Hindi course should also explain Hinglish, the mix of Hindi and English common in Indian cities.
Practising Hindi with films, news and language exchange
Mumbai's film industry, often called Bollywood, releases many Hindi films every year, and streaming services carry a large share of them with subtitles.
Five habits that support a Hindi course
- Watch films with Hindi subtitles in Devanagari once you can read the script.
- Listen to news in plain Hindi from the Hindi services of large international broadcasters.
- Switch your phone keyboard to Hindi and write short messages in Devanagari.
- Learn vocabulary with flashcard apps that schedule reviews at growing intervals.
- Learn nouns together with an adjective, such as बड़ा घर (baṛā ghar, big house), because gender decides the endings.
Short daily sessions of 20 to 30 minutes help more with Hindi than one long session a week, because script and new sounds need constant repetition.
Hindi for work, study and research
In international companies, contracts, emails and presentations with Indian partners usually run in English. Hindi gives you an edge in personal contact with colleagues at plants, suppliers in northern India and people who speak little English.
Fields where Hindi skills count
- Engineering, automotive and pharmaceutical firms run sites in India and value staff who know the country.
- Development agencies and foundations work with partners in Hindi-speaking states.
- Journalism and research on South Asia need access to sources in Hindi.
At university, Hindi is part of South Asian studies and Indology.
Realistic targets on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR, levels A1 to C2) look like this. Small talk and relationship building need A2 to B1. Negotiating in Hindi needs B2 or higher. Translation work requires C1 plus subject training.
Frequently asked questions about online Hindi courses
How long does it take to learn Hindi for simple conversations?
Simple Hindi conversations at CEFR level A2 take adults roughly 250 to 350 study hours, including self-study. At five hours a week, you reach that point in about a year. For confident professional use, the US Foreign Service Institute estimates about 44 weeks of full-time study.
Do you need to learn the Devanagari script in a Hindi course?
The Devanagari script belongs in every Hindi course that goes beyond survival phrases. Romanised spellings are inconsistent and often hide aspirated and retroflex sounds. Most learners read Devanagari slowly after three to six weeks of practice.
Can Hindi learners understand spoken Urdu?
Hindi learners understand most everyday spoken Urdu, because both languages share grammar and core vocabulary. The differences lie in formal vocabulary and in script, since Urdu uses a Perso-Arabic script. News, literature and official language therefore differ more than conversation.
Is there an internationally recognised Hindi certificate?
No worldwide standard certificate exists for Hindi, unlike IELTS for English. Learners prove Hindi skills with university exams, the ACTFL OPI speaking interview, certificates from the Kendriya Hindi Sansthan in Agra or a CEFR self-assessment. Strong proof names the level, the teaching hours and the issuing body.
What role does Hindi play next to English in Indian business?
Hindi complements English in Indian business, mainly outside head offices. Contracts, emails and presentations usually run in English. With suppliers, plant staff and local authorities in northern India, Hindi builds trust and makes coordination easier.
How much do private online Hindi lessons cost?
Private online Hindi lessons cost roughly US$10 to 40 per hour as of 2026. Teachers based in India often charge less than teachers in Europe or North America. Business Hindi and exam preparation sit at the upper end of the range.
What level can a language app take you to in Hindi?
A language app usually teaches Hindi basics such as vocabulary, script and simple sentences. For fluent speaking, an app lacks correction by a teacher and long free conversations. Apps work as a daily supplement to a Hindi course with a teacher.
In which regions of India is Hindi the everyday language?
Hindi is the everyday language mainly in northern and central India, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi. In southern and eastern India, languages such as Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Bengali dominate. There, English often serves as the shared language between strangers.
