What AI checks reliably in Russian
An AI tutor is a program that sets exercises, corrects your answers and adapts the next task to your mistakes. For Russian, it is strong where many repetitions and quick feedback count, and weak where judgement or handwriting is needed.
| Area | What AI does | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Stress | speech recognition flags a wrong stressed syllable | only in spoken exercises, not in written ones |
| Hard and soft consonants | flags a hard consonant where a soft one belongs | depends on the quality of the acoustic model |
| Case endings | adaptive drills with instant correction | rule explanations are not always correct |
| Verb aspect | drills pairs such as делать and сделать | the choice in context needs explanation |
| Cursive | no useful feedback | a teacher has to read and correct it |
Speech recognition turns your spoken words into text, and pronunciation scoring compares each sound with an acoustic model, a model that has learned from many recordings how each sound should sound. Accents and voices that are rare in the training data lower the accuracy. A 2020 study in the journal PNAS found almost twice as many errors with Black American speakers as with white speakers in five large speech recognition systems.
Test the scoring during the free trial with the word молоко (milk, said malakó) and the pairs брат and брать (brother, to take) and рука and руку (hand, with moving stress). A useful system tells the forms apart and names the sound or syllable you got wrong.
Stress marks and the letter ё in AI-generated texts
Normal Russian texts do not mark stress, and learners need marked texts for a long time. You can ask an AI tool to add stress marks to a text, but check unfamiliar words in a dictionary. A language model learned mostly from unmarked texts, so it can place a stress mark on the wrong syllable without any sign of doubt.
The letter ё causes a similar problem. In normal texts it is often written as е, although it is pronounced yo and always stressed. The difference can change the meaning, as in все (everybody) and всё (everything). Ask the AI to write ё consistently in learning texts, and check whether it does.
A text with a wrong stress mark trains a wrong habit, and nobody corrects it until you speak with a teacher. Mark doubtful words and ask about them in your next live lesson.
Case and aspect explanations from a language model
Many AI tutors run on a language model, an AI that writes text by predicting the most likely next word. Its explanations sound fluent, but the model does not look up a rule. Two areas of Russian grammar need a second check in a grammar book or with a teacher.
- Verb aspect depends on context, and explanations of why a perfective or imperfective form fits are often vague or wrong.
- Case rules after numbers and prepositions have exceptions that a model can state wrongly, as with одна книга, две книги, пять книг (one, two, five books).
AI tools are strong at volume. They generate endless drills, example sentences at your level and error statistics that show which cases stay weak. Type in Cyrillic and not in Latin transliteration, because reading and writing Cyrillic is part of the training.
Ask the AI to turn a text you already know into a gap exercise with the case endings removed. You practise exactly the endings you need, and you can check the result against the original.
Voice data, the GDPR and providers based in Russia
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the EU law on personal data, and it binds every provider serving people in the EU. Voice recordings, error profiles and study times are personal data, and a recording used to identify you uniquely counts as biometric data with special protection.
A provider of Russian courses or AI tools may be based in Russia. Personal data may leave the EU easily only to countries with an adequacy decision, the European Commission's finding that a country protects data at a level comparable to the EU. The Commission's list of adequacy decisions does not include Russia. A provider that sends data there needs other safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, which are model contract terms pre-approved by the Commission.
Check in the privacy policy where recordings are processed, how long they are kept and whether they train the AI. If the policy does not name the country, ask before you upload your voice.
For children in the EU, Article 8 of the GDPR requires parental consent under 16 for services that rely on consent, and member states may lower that age to 13.
A weekly plan with AI drills and an RKI teacher
AI and a teacher cover different parts of learning Russian. The best teachers for the human part have training in Russian as a foreign language, known in Russian as RKI.
- Five times 20 minutes of AI drills for case endings, aspect pairs and vocabulary.
- Three times 15 minutes of speaking with an AI conversation partner, with stress feedback.
- One live lesson of 60 minutes, in which the teacher explains the error patterns from the AI statistics and corrects your cursive.
- Daily listening to real speakers, because AI voices are clearer than Russian news or a conversation in a café.
Prices are rough 2026 guide values in US dollars or euros. Before a TORFL, telc or ECL exam, let the teacher mark at least two full mock exams, because course apps do not publish evidence that their scores match the official criteria.
Frequently asked questions about AI online Russian courses
Can an AI app correct Russian stress?
An AI app can correct Russian stress in spoken exercises, because speech recognition flags a wrong stressed syllable. In written exercises it notices nothing. Test it during the trial with words such as рука and руку, where the stress moves, and check whether it names the wrong syllable.
Can an AI tutor explain Russian verb aspect correctly?
An AI tutor explains Russian verb aspect correctly only part of the time, because a language model predicts likely words and does not look up rules. Its explanations sound fluent even when they are wrong. Use AI for aspect drills and check new rules in a grammar book or with a teacher.
Can AI teach Russian cursive handwriting?
AI tools give no useful feedback on Russian cursive handwriting, because they practise typed and spoken Russian. Handwritten letters such as т, which resembles an m, need a teacher who reads your writing. Sending a photo of a handwritten text to your teacher once a week is a simple routine.
May an AI Russian course send EU users' voice recordings to servers in Russia?
An AI Russian course may send EU users' voice recordings to servers in Russia only with extra safeguards, because the EU has no adequacy decision for Russia. Standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission are the usual tool. The privacy policy must name the country and the safeguard.
How much does AI practice for Russian cost per month?
AI practice for Russian costs roughly 10 to 30 US dollars or euros a month for an AI tutor or conversation app in 2026. A weekly one-to-one lesson with a Russian teacher adds about 12 to 40 per hour. Many apps have a free basic version with limited AI features.
