What AI practice does well for Italian learners
An AI language course is an online course in which software with artificial intelligence (AI) sets tasks, listens to you and corrects your answers. Italian has more than 60 million native speakers, so a large amount of spoken and written Italian exists to train such systems. Its regular spelling also helps, because the system can compare what you read aloud directly with the written text.
Four tasks suit AI practice in Italian.
- Conjugation drills, because Italian verbs change for every person, as in parlo, parli, parla (I speak, you speak, he or she speaks).
- Articles and merged prepositions, such as lo studente or del instead of di il, practised in many short rounds.
- Vocabulary with spaced repetition, a method that shows each word again shortly before you would forget it. False friends such as parenti (relatives) and libreria (bookshop) fit well into such lists.
- Speaking practice at any hour, including role plays in a café, a shop or a hotel.
AI practice adds volume to your week and does not shorten the path by itself. The US Foreign Service Institute puts professional fluency in Italian at about 552 class hours for English speakers, and AI helps you reach those hours regularly.
Double consonants and regional vowels in AI scoring
Pronunciation scoring compares your recording with a model of how Italian should sound. Two features of Italian make this difficult.
The first is double consonants. In Italian a longer consonant changes the meaning of a word.
| Single | Double | Meanings |
|---|---|---|
| nono | nonno | ninth, grandfather |
| caro | carro | dear, cart |
| sete | sette | thirst, seven |
| pena | penna | pain, pen |
Speech recognition, the part of the system that turns speech into text, picks the word that fits the sentence best. If you say ho sette anni (I am seven years old) with a short t, the transcript still shows sette, because ho sete anni makes no sense, and a system that checks only the transcript reports no error. If you say nonno with a short n in a sentence about your family, the transcript may show nonno anyway.
The second is open and closed vowels. Standard Italian distinguishes an open and a closed e and o, as in pèsca (peach) and pésca (fishing), but their distribution varies by region. A system trained on one norm can mark a regional variant as an error. The CEFR, the European scale from A1 to C2, judges pronunciation mainly by intelligibility.
Test the scoring in the free trial with the pairs from the table. Say each word on purpose with the wrong length. A useful system marks the error instead of accepting both versions.
Lei, tu and the congiuntivo in conversations with an AI tutor
Many AI tutors are built on language models, AI systems that generate text by predicting the most likely next word. In Italian, two weaknesses of such tutors show up often.
The first is the form of address. Lei is the polite form, the third person singular, used with strangers and in business, and tu is the informal form. An AI tutor may switch between them within one conversation or answer a formal request with tu.
The second is the congiuntivo, the Italian subjunctive after verbs of opinion, wish or doubt, as in penso che sia vero (I think it is true). In relaxed spoken Italian many speakers use the indicative instead, and an AI that imitates casual speech may accept penso che è vero. Exams such as the CILS expect the standard form with the congiuntivo in formal writing.
Three habits reduce these errors.
- Tell the AI at the start whether the role play uses Lei or tu.
- Ask it to explain each correction with the rule, and check new rules in a grammar book or with a teacher.
- Ask for formal written Italian when you practise for an exam.
Grammar explanations from language models are sometimes wrong but sound confident. Check every rule that is new to you before you learn it by heart.
Data protection for AI Italian tutors in the EU
An AI Italian course processes voice recordings, texts and error profiles, which are personal data. The GDPR, the General Data Protection Regulation of the EU, governs how providers may process them, and it binds every provider that serves people in the EU.
Italy's data protection authority, the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali, has shown that it applies these rules to AI chat services. On 30 March 2023 it ordered an immediate provisional limitation on the processing of Italian users' data by ChatGPT. Among its reasons it named the missing information for users, the missing legal basis for collecting training data and the absence of an age check for minors.
Ask every provider three questions.
- Does it use your recordings to train its AI, and can you switch that off?
- How long does it keep recordings, and can you delete them yourself?
- Does a children's account ask for parental consent? In the EU, children under 16 need it for consent-based services unless their country has set a lower age of at least 13, and in the USA, COPPA, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, requires it for children under 13.
The Garante decision concerned a general AI chat service, not a language course. It shows which points European regulators check, and the same points apply to an AI tutor for Italian.
A weekly plan with AI practice and an Italian teacher
A hybrid Italian course combines AI practice with live lessons. The AI covers volume, and the teacher covers what AI scores unreliably.
| Component | Who handles it | Time per week |
|---|---|---|
| Conjugation, articles, vocabulary | AI app with spaced repetition | 5 x 15 minutes |
| Shadowing short dialogues with scoring | AI conversation partner | 3 x 15 minutes |
| Double consonants, free conversation, Lei and tu | live teacher | 1 x 60 minutes |
| Written tasks in the format of CILS or CELI | teacher | 1 x 20 minutes |
Shadowing means repeating a line right after you hear it, at the same speed and with the same melody. CILS and CELI are recognised Italian certificates, and at CILS you need the minimum score in every skill, so speaking and writing need human feedback. The plan adds up to just over three hours a week.
From B2 on, the teacher's share grows, because the congiuntivo, formal register and open discussion are the areas in which AI feedback is less reliable.
Frequently asked questions about AI online Italian courses
Does an AI notice missing double consonants in Italian?
An AI notices missing double consonants in Italian less reliably than wrong words. Speech recognition picks the word that fits the sentence, so a short t in ho sette anni can still appear as sette in the transcript. Test this in a free trial with pairs such as nono and nonno or caro and carro.
Does an AI pronunciation score treat regional Italian accents as errors?
An AI pronunciation score can treat regional Italian accents as errors if its model follows one norm for open and closed e and o. The distribution of these vowels varies by region, and the CEFR judges pronunciation mainly by intelligibility. A regional accent that people understand without effort is not a weakness under the CEFR.
Does an AI Italian tutor use Lei or tu?
An AI Italian tutor uses Lei or tu depending on the instruction, and it may switch between them within one conversation. Tell the tutor at the start which form the role play needs. In business and with strangers, Lei is the correct form.
Which data protection rules apply to AI Italian courses?
AI Italian courses that serve people in the EU must follow the GDPR, the EU's General Data Protection Regulation. Italy's data protection authority, the Garante, ordered a provisional limitation on ChatGPT on 30 March 2023, partly because there was no age check for minors. Check whether a provider uses your recordings for AI training and how long it keeps them.
Can an AI prepare you for the Italian CILS exam?
An AI can prepare you for the Italian CILS exam with daily practice in grammar, vocabulary and listening. At CILS you need the minimum score in every skill, so speaking and writing also need feedback from a teacher who knows the official criteria. AI scores are estimates, and only the Università per Stranieri di Siena awards CILS results.
