4 tasks AI handles well in Japanese practice

An AI tutor is a program that talks with you by text or voice, scores your pronunciation with speech recognition and adapts exercises to your mistakes. For Japanese it covers the parts of learning that need many repetitions.

TaskWhat the AI doesWhat you still need
Kana and kanji reviewshows each sign again just before you forget ithandwriting practice if your exam needs it
Speaking practiceholds dialogues at any houra teacher for politeness and free conversation
Reading supportadds furigana and removes it step by stepreading without help
Typingcorrects sentences typed with Japanese inputfeedback on style and register

The review method in the first row is called spaced repetition. Furigana are small kana printed next to a kanji to show its reading. AI tools can also read a Japanese text aloud at a slower speed, which helps you link the written text to its sound. Japanese input on a phone or computer works by typing a word in Latin letters or kana and picking the right kanji from a list of candidates, so typing practice also trains kanji recognition.

Japan is UTC+9 all year, which is 13 to 17 hours ahead of most of North America and 7 to 8 hours ahead of central Europe. An AI tutor fills the hours in which teachers in Japan are asleep.

Pronunciation scores can miss vowel length and pitch accent

Japanese has only five vowels, so many learners pronounce single sounds well early on. Two other features carry meaning and are harder to score.

1 Vowel and consonant length

Obasan means aunt and obāsan grandmother, kite means come and kitte postage stamp. A score that rates each sound on its own may accept a vowel that is too short.

2 Pitch accent

In Tokyo Japanese, hashi with a high first syllable means chopsticks and with a high second syllable bridge. Ask whether the pronunciation feedback covers pitch or rates sounds only. A wrong pitch accent rarely makes a sentence incomprehensible, but it sounds foreign, so it matters most for advanced learners and for jobs with customer contact.

3 Transcripts and training data

Speech recognition picks the most likely words and kanji for the whole sentence, so a correct transcript proves little about your length or pitch. It also works only as well as the recordings it learned from. A 2020 study in PNAS found clearly different error rates between groups of speakers in five commercial systems.

💡

Test the scoring during the free trial. Say obasan and obāsan, then hashi with both pitch patterns. A useful system scores the wrong versions lower and names the problem.

3

Politeness levels are the main weak point of AI tutors

Japanese changes verb forms and words depending on the relationship between speakers. Casual speech among friends is called futsūgo, the polite -masu form teineigo, respectful forms sonkeigo and humble forms kenjōgo. Courses start with the polite -masu form. Respectful and humble forms, together called keigo, are expected with customers and in business correspondence.

AI tutors run on language models, programs that generate text by predicting the most likely next word. They may mix politeness levels within one answer or suggest a casual form where keigo is expected. Their explanations sound fluent even when they are wrong, because the model does not look up a rule.

👍 Advantages
  • ✓AI tutors correct every sentence instantly.
  • ✓They repeat dialogues as often as you need, without impatience.
  • ✓You can ask for the same sentence in casual, polite and respectful form.
👎 Drawbacks
  • ✗They may mix politeness levels in one answer.
  • ✗Keigo explanations can be wrong but sound confident.
  • ✗Nobody notices when you stop practising for two weeks.

Tell the AI who you are talking to, for example a customer, a professor or a friend, and have a teacher check every new keigo pattern before you use it at work.

Voice data and the EU adequacy decision for Japan

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the EU law on personal data. It binds every provider that offers its service to people in the EU. An AI Japanese course processes voice recordings, texts and error profiles, so it collects more personal data than an ordinary online course.

The European Commission has recognised Japan as a country with an adequate level of data protection, in a decision dating from 2019. Your data can therefore flow to a provider in Japan without additional safeguards such as standard contractual clauses, which are contracts with data protection terms approved by the Commission. Your rights under the GDPR stay the same. For providers that store recordings in countries without such a decision, additional safeguards remain necessary, so the storage location matters.

ℹ️

Ask every provider four questions before you subscribe. Where are recordings stored? Do they train the AI, and can you switch that off? How long are they kept, and can you delete them under Article 17 GDPR? Does a children's account ask for parental consent, as Article 8 GDPR requires for services based on consent?

AI practice and a Japanese teacher in one week

AI practice works best next to a teacher who explains politeness and corrects you in free conversation.

ComponentWho handles itTime per week
Kana, kanji and wordsapp with spaced repetition7 x 10 minutes
Length and pitch drillsAI pronunciation trainer3 x 10 minutes
Dialogues on everyday topicsAI tutor3 x 15 minutes
Politeness, free conversation, error patternslive teacher1 to 2 x 60 minutes

The plan adds up to about four hours a week. Before each live lesson, share the error statistics of your app with the teacher, who then works on the patterns the AI keeps flagging. A fixed lesson time also keeps you going, because nobody follows up when you skip a week of AI practice.

Frequently asked questions about AI online Japanese courses

Can an AI app correct Japanese pitch accent?

An AI app corrects Japanese pitch accent only if its pronunciation feedback covers pitch, and some scores rate single sounds only. Test it during the trial by saying hashi with both pitch patterns. A useful app scores the wrong pattern lower and shows the pitch of your voice.

Do AI tutors use the right politeness level in Japanese?

AI tutors use the right politeness level in Japanese only part of the time and may mix casual, polite and respectful forms in one answer. Tell the tutor who you are speaking to and have a teacher check new keigo patterns. Keigo is the respectful and humble language expected with customers.

Is it allowed under the GDPR to use an AI Japanese app from a provider in Japan?

Using an AI Japanese app from a provider in Japan is allowed under the GDPR, because the European Commission has recognised Japan's data protection as adequate since 2019. No additional safeguards are needed for the transfer. Your rights, such as deletion under Article 17 GDPR, still apply.

Can AI replace a teacher for learning Japanese kanji?

AI can replace a teacher for reviewing Japanese kanji, because apps with spaced repetition show each kanji just before you forget it, and furigana can be removed step by step. Handwriting, stroke order and choosing the right kanji in your own texts still benefit from a teacher's feedback.

How do I combine an AI tutor with live online Japanese lessons?

You combine an AI tutor with live online Japanese lessons by using the AI daily for kana, kanji and short dialogues and the teacher once or twice a week for politeness and free conversation. Share the app's error statistics before each lesson, so the teacher works on your recurring mistakes.
