4 tasks where AI helps you learn Vietnamese

An AI tutor is a program that practises with you in writing or by voice, points out mistakes and adjusts the difficulty. Most AI tutors use speech recognition, the technology that turns your spoken words into text.

1 Vocabulary and classifiers

Spaced repetition, a method that shows each word again shortly before you would forget it, suits the large Vietnamese vocabulary with few links to English. Drills also fix classifiers, the short words before nouns such as con in hai con mèo (two cats).

2 Sentence patterns

Vietnamese verbs never change, so drills on time words such as đã, đang and sẽ and on questions with không give quick results.

3 Listening

A reading voice, the text-to-speech function that reads text aloud, lets you hear any sentence as often as you need. That helps with the most common gap of Vietnamese learners, following speech at normal speed.

4 Writing with tone marks

You write short texts with a Vietnamese keyboard, and the AI corrects word choice and grammar. Writing with all tone marks from the start helps you learn the tones along the way.

2

Tone recognition decides an AI tutor's value

Vietnamese is a tonal language. Speakers in the north distinguish six tones, while in the south hỏi and ngã merge, so southern speakers use five. For pronunciation practice, the key question is whether a program reliably recognises these tones.

Two mechanisms can hide a tone error. Speech recognition guesses words from the context of the sentence, so a wrong tone can still produce the right text and a high score. And speech recognition works only as well as the recordings it was trained on, so a system trained mostly on one variety can mark the other variety as wrong.

TestWhat you doUseful result

Question melodyask a question with không and raise your voice at the endthe AI flags the changed last tone

💡

If an AI tutor accepts wrong tones as correct, use it for vocabulary and grammar only, and leave pronunciation to a teacher.

3

AI text, tone marks and forms of address

Chatbots run on language models, AI systems that produce text by predicting likely next words. They can write Vietnamese with full tone marks. A sentence you type without marks is ambiguous, though, because a syllable such as ma can stand for six different words, and the chatbot then has to guess.

Forms of address are a second weak point. The words for I and you depend on how old the speakers are relative to each other: anh for a slightly older man, chị for a slightly older woman, em for a younger person and ông or bà for much older people. An AI does not know your age or that of your partner, so it cannot make this choice for you.

Grammar explanations from language models sound confident and are sometimes wrong, for example on which classifier goes with a noun. Check new rules in a grammar book or with a teacher.

⚠️

AI text can mix northern and southern everyday words, such as bát and chén for bowl.

AI advice on forms of address ignores the real age and rank of the people involved.

Splitting the week between AI and a Vietnamese teacher

Vietnamese needs a higher share of lessons with a teacher than many languages, because tones need feedback from someone who hears them. A teacher hears tone errors you cannot hear yourself. A typical week can look like this:

  • Five sessions of 20 minutes with AI drills on vocabulary, classifiers and sentence patterns.
  • Three sessions of 15 minutes of listening with a reading voice and of speaking with an AI conversation partner.
  • Two lessons of 45 to 60 minutes with a teacher for tones, free conversation and forms of address.

Private Vietnamese lessons cost about US$10 to 35 per hour in 2026, and teachers based in Vietnam usually charge less. Send the AI's error list to the teacher before each lesson, so the lesson starts with your weak tones.

Vietnam uses UTC+7 all year, so early mornings in Europe and evenings in Australia fit lessons with teachers in Vietnam.

5

Data protection for Vietnamese voice recordings

Voice recordings are personal data. In the EU, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) governs how providers process them, and it binds every provider that serves people in the EU, also from outside the EU.

If your teacher or platform is based in Vietnam, Vietnam's Law on Personal Data Protection, Law No. 91/2025/QH15, applies there as well. It entered into force on 1 January 2026, and it does not allow consent by default, so a provider must obtain your consent actively and be able to prove it.

4 questions to ask an AI course or a teacher

  1. Where are your recordings stored and processed?
  2. Are your recordings used to train the AI, and can you switch that off?
  3. How do you delete recordings and your learning data?
  4. Do lessons and homework run through a messaging app, and who can read them there?
ℹ️

For children, Article 8 of the GDPR applies. If a service relies on consent, children under 16 need a parent's approval, and each EU country may lower that age to 13.

Frequently asked questions about AI online Vietnamese courses

How do you test whether an AI tutor hears Vietnamese tones?

You test whether an AI tutor hears Vietnamese tones with the series ma, mà, má, mả, mã, mạ. Say it correctly once, then swap two tones on purpose. A useful AI tutor flags the swapped tones, while one that accepts them is not suitable for pronunciation practice.

Can AI chatbots write Vietnamese with correct tone marks?

AI chatbots can write Vietnamese with full tone marks. A sentence you type without marks is ambiguous, because a syllable such as ma can stand for six words, so the chatbot has to guess and can guess wrong. Type with a Vietnamese keyboard to avoid this.

Does an AI tutor teach northern or southern Vietnamese?

Whether an AI tutor teaches northern or southern Vietnamese depends on the recordings it was trained on. Ask the provider, and test the tutor by saying da (skin) once the northern and once the southern way. Choose a tutor whose expected variety matches the people you want to talk to.

Can AI replace a teacher for Vietnamese tone training?

AI cannot fully replace a teacher for Vietnamese tone training, because AI tutors recognise tones with varying reliability. Use AI for repetition, vocabulary and listening between lessons. A teacher hears tone errors you cannot hear yourself and corrects them consistently.

Why can an AI tutor score a wrong Vietnamese tone as correct?

An AI tutor can score a wrong Vietnamese tone as correct because speech recognition guesses words from the context of the sentence. The transcript then shows the right word although the tone was wrong. A system trained mostly on one variety can also misjudge the other variety.

Which data protection law covers a Vietnamese teacher based in Vietnam?

A Vietnamese teacher or platform based in Vietnam falls under Vietnam's Law on Personal Data Protection, Law No. 91/2025/QH15, in force since 1 January 2026. It does not allow consent by default. A provider that serves learners in the EU must also follow the GDPR.
