What AI practice does for English learners
An AI tutor is software that has learned from large amounts of language data to recognise, assess and produce speech and text. English has more such data than any other language, so speech recognition and writing feedback usually work better for English than for languages with little training data.
| Task | What AI does well | Where it is weak |
|---|---|---|
| Speaking practice | unlimited dialogues at any hour | open discussion of complex topics |
| Pronunciation | scores per sound, word and sentence | strong accents, children's voices, poor microphones |
| Writing | articles, tenses, spelling, word choice | tone, politeness, quality of the argument |
| Vocabulary | spaced repetition at the right moment | idioms in context |
Spaced repetition means that the system shows a word again just before you are likely to forget it.
AI scoring has also reached English exams. According to its 2026 test specifications, ETS scores the TOEFL iBT writing and speaking tasks with AI systems, and Pearson scores PTE Academic by machine. Practising with AI feedback therefore resembles part of the real exam situation.
AI practice suits learners who want a high volume of speaking and writing with fast feedback. For conversation about complex topics, a human partner stays important.
Speech recognition for English spoken with an accent
Automatic speech recognition turns your spoken English into text so that the AI can check words, grammar and fluency. It works only as well as the recordings it learned from.
A Stanford University study published in PNAS in 2020 tested five large commercial speech recognition systems on American English. It found an average word error rate of 0.35 for Black American speakers and 0.19 for white speakers. The word error rate is the share of words a system gets wrong. The study shows that voices rare in the training data get more errors, and a strong accent, a child's voice or a poor microphone can lower your score in the same way although your English has not got worse.
- Scores can fluctuate with accents, background noise and microphone quality.
- Short, safe sentences earn high scores while saying little about your range.
- An app score is a number on the provider's own scale, not a CEFR level.
The CEFR, the European six-level scale from A1 to C2, only matches an app score if the provider has linked its scale to recognised exams in a published study.
Which English do AI apps score against?
Pronunciation scoring compares each sound you make with an acoustic model, a model that has learned from many recordings how each English sound should sound. Many apps use American or British recordings as the reference.
This choice matters for English more than for most languages, because English has several standard varieties. If you speak with Indian, Nigerian or Scottish features, a model trained mainly on American speech may mark correct sounds as errors. Since its 2020 Companion Volume, the CEFR, the European six-level scale from A1 to C2, assesses pronunciation mainly by intelligibility, so a noticeable accent is not a fault if people understand you without effort.
AI feedback helps most with sounds that learners from many backgrounds find hard.
- The th in think and this.
- Vowel length, as in ship and sheep.
- Final consonants, as in asked or world.
- Word stress, as in photograph and photographer.
During the trial, say the same sentence once carefully and once sloppily. A useful system scores the two attempts clearly differently and names the sounds that got worse.
AI feedback on English writing and its limits
AI writing feedback is strongest on form. It reliably flags missing articles, wrong tenses, spelling mistakes and awkward word choices. It is weaker on tone and politeness, and it judges poorly whether an argument persuades a reader.
A language model is an AI that generates text by predicting the most likely next word. That is why its grammar explanations sound fluent and can still be wrong, because the model does not look up a rule. Check any rule that is new to you in a grammar reference or with a teacher.
Two English-specific points need attention. Keep one spelling system, British or American, throughout a text, and check that the tool does not mix colour and color. And check your university's or employer's rules on AI use, because many institutions limit AI help in assessed work.
- ✓AI corrects every sentence within seconds.
- ✓It shows recurring error types across weeks.
- ✓It suits drafts of emails, essays and exam tasks.
- ✗It misses errors of tone and register.
- ✗Its explanations are sometimes wrong but sound confident.
- ✗It does not replace a teacher's feedback on long texts.
Voice recordings and privacy in AI English courses
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the EU law on personal data, and the UK has an almost identical UK GDPR. An AI English course processes voice recordings, texts, error profiles and study times, which is more personal data than an ordinary online course collects.
If a recording is used to identify you uniquely, it counts as biometric data under Article 9 of the GDPR and receives special protection. Pronunciation scoring does not need that kind of identification.
- Are recordings processed in the EU or in a country such as the US?
- Do your recordings train the AI, and can you switch that off?
- How long are recordings kept, and can you delete them under Article 17?
- Can you export your learning data under Article 20?
The EU AI Act, the EU regulation for AI systems, adds further rules. Since February 2025 it bans AI that infers learners' emotions in educational institutions, except for medical or safety reasons. Since August 2026 a system must make clear that you are talking to an AI. AI that evaluates learning outcomes in educational institutions must meet high-risk duties from 2 December 2027. In the US, COPPA requires verifiable parental consent for children under 13.
AI tutor and English teacher in one week
A hybrid English course combines AI practice with live lessons. The AI handles drilling and measurement, and the teacher handles conversation, interpretation and planning.
| Component | Who handles it | Time per week |
|---|---|---|
| Vocabulary and grammar drills | adaptive learning system | 5 x 20 minutes |
| Shadowing and pronunciation feedback | AI conversation partner | 3 x 15 minutes |
| Free conversation, error patterns | live English teacher | 1 x 60 minutes |
| Writing task with feedback | teacher, after an AI first check | 1 text |
An adaptive system adjusts the next task to your answers. Shadowing means repeating a recording straight after the speaker to copy rhythm and intonation. A teacher spots patterns that an AI does not interpret, such as a learner carrying the word order or prepositions of their first language into English.
Cambridge English estimates about 500 to 600 guided learning hours from zero to B2. AI does not shorten this path, but it helps you reach those hours consistently.
Frequently asked questions about AI online English courses
How accurately does AI speech recognition understand English spoken with a strong accent?
AI speech recognition understands English with a strong accent less accurately when its model has seen few recordings of that accent. A 2020 study in PNAS found almost twice the word error rate for Black American speakers as for white speakers across five major systems. Test the app with your own voice during a trial.
Can an AI tutor prepare me for the TOEFL or IELTS speaking part?
An AI tutor can prepare you for the TOEFL speaking part with unlimited practice, and ETS itself scores TOEFL speaking with AI systems since 2026. For IELTS speaking, which is a conversation with a human examiner, you also need practice with a person. Use the AI for volume and a teacher for mock interviews.
Which English pronunciation standard do AI language apps use?
AI language apps usually score English pronunciation against American or British reference recordings. Speakers of other varieties, such as Indian or Nigerian English, may therefore lose points for correct sounds. The CEFR judges pronunciation mainly by how easily people understand you.
Can AI correct English essays reliably?
AI corrects English essays reliably for articles, tenses, spelling and word choice. It is less reliable on tone, politeness and the strength of an argument, and its grammar explanations are sometimes wrong. Check new rules in a grammar reference or with a teacher.
Do AI English apps store users' voice recordings?
AI English apps store voice recordings at least for as long as the analysis takes, and some keep them longer to train their models. The privacy policy must state how long. Under the GDPR you can ask for deletion and object to use for AI training when the provider relies on its legitimate interests.
Can an AI tutor replace an English teacher?
An AI tutor can replace an English teacher for drilling, revision and pronunciation scoring. A teacher remains stronger at open conversation, at feedback on long texts and at interpreting error patterns from your first language. Many learners combine daily AI practice with one live English lesson a week.
