Where Russian counts at work

Russian is the most widely spoken Slavic language and one of the six official languages of the United Nations. It is an official language in Russia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan uses it officially alongside Kazakh, and in Central Asia it often serves as a shared language of business. Five fields regularly ask for Russian at work.

FieldWhere Russian is usedUsual level
Translation and interpretingagencies, courts, international organisationsC1
Journalism and researchsources in the originalB2 to C1
Diplomacy and international organisationsRussian as a UN official languageC1
Logistics, energy and tradepartners in Central Asia and the CaucasusB1 to B2
Health, social and public servicesRussian-speaking communities in Israel, Germany, the US and the Baltic statesB1 to B2

The levels are guide values derived from the CEFR descriptions, and your employer sets the binding requirement. The CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, describes six levels from A1 to C2.

Since 2022, travel and work in Russia have become much harder to arrange for many people from the EU, the UK and North America. Before any project with partners in Russia, check your foreign ministry's travel advice and the sanctions rules that apply to your employer.

Business Russian or specialised Russian by role

Courses for work come in two types. Business communication trains how you work in Russian, meaning emails, calls, meetings and negotiations. Specialised language trains the terms and text types of one profession, for example for translators, lawyers or engineers.

Both types meet the official-business style, in Russian официально-деловой стиль. This is the formal register of contracts, official letters and regulations. It relies on fixed formulas and on verbal nouns, as in в связи с изменением сроков (in connection with the change of deadlines), and it reads very differently from spoken Russian.

👍 Advantages
  • ✓Business Russian works in almost any job with Russian-speaking partners.
  • ✓Specialised Russian prepares you for the texts of one profession, such as contracts or technical specifications.
  • ✓Both train the official-business style that partners expect in writing.
👎 Drawbacks
  • ✗Business Russian does not cover the terminology of law, engineering or medicine.
  • ✗Specialised Russian courses are rare online and often run as one-to-one lessons only.

Names, forms of address and letters in business Russian

Business Russian follows clear conventions of address, and a course should practise them from the first lesson.

SituationRussianNote
Formal youвыfor partners, superiors and strangers
Addressing a partnerИван Петровичfirst name and patronymic
Letter openingУважаемый Иван Петрович!dear, with an exclamation mark
Letter closingС уважениемwith respect, the usual formal closing
Informal youтыonly once both sides agree

A patronymic is a middle name formed from the father's first name. Men's patronymics end in -ович or -евич, women's in -овна or -евна, so the daughter of Пётр is Петровна. In formal contact, first name and patronymic together are the polite form, and the surname alone sounds cold.

💡

Ask new partners how they prefer to be addressed and note the patronymic in your contacts. A wrong form of address in the first email is remembered longer than a grammar mistake.

B1 to C1 at work and proof with TORFL, telc or ECL

Business Russian courses usually start at B1, the third of six CEFR levels, at which you handle everyday life without help. As guide values, B1 covers standard emails, B2 covers meetings and presentations, negotiations need B2 to C1, and contracts and translation need C1.

Three exams prove Russian at work, and the right one depends on where you apply.

  • TORFL, the state exam of the Russian Federation, covers A1 to C2. According to St Petersburg State University, C1 qualifies holders to work as translators, editors, journalists or diplomats. According to HSE University in Moscow, the certificate does not expire, which makes it lasting proof for a CV.
  • telc Russian from telc gGmbH in Frankfurt tests A1, A2, B1 and B2 at language schools and adult education centres, mostly in Europe, and suits job applications.
  • ECL Russian tests A2 to C1 in four modules and is known to universities and employers in Central Europe.

US employers may instead rate you on the ACTFL or ILR scales. Ask the employer which proof it accepts before you register.

⚠️

All three exams take place in person at a test centre. TORFL sessions outside Russia run only at a few partner centres, so plan the date well in advance.

6 modules and the costs of a business Russian course

A business Russian course starts with a needs analysis, a conversation or questionnaire about your tasks, partners and difficulties. The teacher then builds the course from modules like these.

  1. Emails and letters with the formulas of the official-business style.
  2. Phone and video calls, with numbers, dates and names spelled aloud.
  3. Meetings and negotiations about prices, deadlines and conditions.
  4. Reading contracts, specifications or reports from your field.
  5. Fast typing on a Cyrillic keyboard.
  6. Small talk and etiquette, from patronymics to the switch from вы to ты.

One-to-one Russian lessons online cost about 12 to 40 US dollars or euros per hour in 2026, and teachers with business or exam experience charge at the upper end. An intensive or exam course costs about 300 to 900 per course. Many employers pay for the course when the job requires Russian, and a request with concrete tasks, a target level and a date has the best chance.
