Spanish in Spain, Latin America and the US

Spanish is a global language. The Instituto Cervantes, Spain's public cultural institute, counts more than 600 million Spanish speakers in its 2025 yearbook, over 500 million of them native speakers. Spanish is the official or main language of Spain, 18 countries in Latin America and Equatorial Guinea, as well as Puerto Rico. Tens of millions of people in the United States speak Spanish at home.

Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and an official language of the European Union. For English speakers the reasons are often closer to home. In the US, Spanish helps in healthcare, education, social work, customer service and public administration. In the UK and Ireland, Spain is a leading holiday destination and trading partner.

Online courses suit Spanish particularly well. Teachers in Mexico, Colombia or Guatemala share time zones with North America, so evening classes are easy to schedule. Teachers in Latin America often charge less than teachers in Spain or the US. If you need Spanish from Spain, teachers in Madrid or Seville are only one hour ahead of London.

💡

Spanish gives you audible progress early, because spelling and pronunciation match almost every time. After a few weeks you can read new words aloud correctly, and at level A2 you can handle simple conversations on holiday.

The FSI estimates about 690 class hours for Spanish

The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) is the language school of the US Department of State. It publishes how long English-speaking diplomats need to learn a language. The target is level 3 on the US ILR scale in speaking and listening, which means working confidently in the language. ILR level 3 is often compared with C1, the fifth of six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). An FSI week consists of 23 hours of class and 17 hours of self-study.

FSI categoryExample languagesDurationClass hours
ISpanish and French (30 weeks each), Italian and Portuguese (24 weeks each)24 to 30 weeks552 to 690
IIGerman, Indonesianabout 36 weeksabout 828
IIIRussian, Polish, Turkish, Greekabout 44 weeksabout 1,012
IVArabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean88 weeks2,200

Spanish therefore belongs to the group of languages English speakers learn fastest. Thousands of shared words help: information is información, possible is posible, and many English words ending in -tion end in -ción in Spanish.

There is no official hours table per level for Spanish. For English, Cambridge English estimates about 200 guided hours per CEFR level, and many language schools use the same order of magnitude for Spanish.

ℹ️

In an evening course with three hours a week, 690 class hours take more than four years. Set milestones instead, such as A2 for travel and B1 for simple conversations at work.

4 Spanish grammar hurdles for English speakers

Spanish pronunciation follows clear rules. Spanish has five pure vowels, and spelling almost always tells you how to say a word. An accent mark, as in 'café', shows which syllable to stress. Three sounds need practice: the rolled rr in 'perro', the single tapped r in 'pero', which sounds like the tt in American 'butter', and the j in 'jamón', which is close to the ch in Scottish 'loch'.

The grammar has four hurdles that English speakers work on for a long time.

1 Two verbs for to be

Spanish separates ser and estar. Ser describes lasting traits such as origin or profession, estar a state or location. 'Soy aburrido' means I am boring, 'estoy aburrido' means I am bored.

2 Two past tenses

The preterite (indefinido) tells completed events, the imperfect (imperfecto) describes background and habits. 'Ayer llovió' means it rained yesterday; 'cuando era niño, llovía mucho' means when I was a child, it used to rain a lot.

3 The subjunctive

The subjunctive is a verb form for wishes, doubts and possibilities. English barely uses it, but Spanish needs it constantly, for example after 'quiero que' (I want you to) or with future time clauses ('cuando llegues', when you arrive).

4 Gender and agreement

Every Spanish noun is masculine or feminine, and articles and adjectives agree with it: 'la casa blanca', 'el coche blanco'.

False friends add a further group of errors. False friends are words that look alike in two languages but mean different things.

constipadohaving a coldconstipated (estreñido)

molestarto botherto molest (abusar)
💡

A good course practises ser and estar, the two past tenses and the subjunctive through speaking tasks, not only with tables. These three topics decide whether you move beyond B1, the third of six CEFR levels.

Spanish from Spain and from Latin America

Spanish has one shared standard, maintained jointly by the Royal Spanish Academy (Real Academia Española) and the language academies of Latin America and other countries. Within that standard, regions differ in pronunciation, forms of address and vocabulary. Speakers of all varieties understand each other without difficulty.

AreaSpainLatin America
Plural youvosotros (informal), ustedes (formal)ustedes only
z and c before e, ilike English thlike s
Vocabularyordenador, coche, móvilcomputadora, carro or auto, celular
Today's past eventshe comido (present perfect)often comí (preterite)

Argentina, Uruguay and parts of Central America add the voseo: instead of 'tú tienes' (you have), speakers say 'vos tenés'. In Buenos Aires, ll and y sound like the English sh.

Most learners in North America study Latin American Spanish, usually close to Mexican usage, because that is the Spanish they hear at work and in their community. Learners in the UK and Ireland more often start with the Spanish of Spain.

ℹ️

Choose the variety by your goal. For travel, work or study in Spain, learn Peninsular Spanish; for Mexico, Colombia or the US, learn Latin American Spanish. Stay consistent within one variety. The DELE and SIELE exams accept all varieties and include listening texts from different countries from level B1.

7 types of online Spanish courses

Online Spanish courses differ above all in their learning goal. The format, whether group, one-to-one, app or AI, comes second.

  1. A general Spanish course trains listening, reading, writing and speaking at every level from A1 to C2.
  2. A conversation course focuses on fluent speaking, pronunciation and situations such as travel, restaurants or a visit to the doctor.
  3. A business Spanish course practises meetings, emails, calls and negotiations with partners in Spain or Latin America.
  4. A specialised course teaches the vocabulary of one profession. Medical Spanish for doctors and nurses is especially common in the US.
  5. An academic course prepares you for a semester or degree at a Spanish-speaking university, with lectures and written assignments.
  6. An exam course prepares you for the DELE or the SIELE.
  7. An AI course puts an AI tutor at the centre, which scores your pronunciation with speech recognition and adapts exercises to your mistakes.

Live group classes with four to eight learners cost the least per hour. One-to-one lessons adapt to your gaps, and apps suit short daily practice. The Instituto Cervantes runs its own online learning platform, AVE Global, for self-study or with a tutor.

👍 Advantages
  • ✓An online course runs for months and consolidates what you learn.
  • ✓It costs less than an immersion trip with accommodation and flights.
  • ✓You can choose teachers from any Spanish-speaking country.
👎 Drawbacks
  • ✗An online course gives you less everyday exposure than two weeks in Spain or Mexico.
  • ✗Without fixed lesson times, many learners lose their rhythm.
  • ✗A screen trains spontaneous listening on the street only to a limited extent.

DELE and SIELE as proof of Spanish skills

Two exams certify Spanish internationally. The Instituto Cervantes is involved in both, and both test reading, listening, writing and speaking. Their levels follow the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) from A1 to C2. The Instituto Cervantes awards the DELE (Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera) on behalf of Spain's Ministry of Education. The SIELE was developed jointly by the Instituto Cervantes, Mexico's UNAM, the University of Salamanca and the University of Buenos Aires.

The DELE speaking test always takes place in person. In Spain, the DELE costs between 112 euros (A1) and 240 euros (C2) in 2026; test centres in other countries set their own prices. If you fail, you register again and retake all parts. The Instituto Cervantes offers the DELE on several fixed dates a year, but not every level on every date, so plan your preparation backwards from the exam date.

Spain requires the DELE A2 or higher plus the CCSE, a test on the constitution and society, for citizenship by residence. Nationals of Spanish-speaking countries are exempt from the DELE.

💡

Choose the DELE when you need a certificate with no expiry date. Choose the SIELE when you need a result quickly or are unsure of your level, because the SIELE always awards a level.

Online Spanish lessons cost about 6 to 45 euros per hour

The price of an online Spanish course depends mainly on the format and on the teacher's country. Teachers in Latin America often charge less than teachers in Spain, the UK or the US. The ranges are rough 2026 market values in euros; prices in US dollars or pounds are of a similar order.

DELE preparation

DELE preparation usually comes as a package of six to twelve weeks with mock exams and marking of writing tasks.

Several options lower your costs.

  • Many employers pay for Spanish training when the role involves Spanish-speaking clients or patients.
  • Public libraries in the US and the UK often give free access to language-learning platforms.

A language exchange costs nothing. You practise with a Spanish speaker by video call, half the time in Spanish and half in English. An exchange does not replace teaching, but it gives you regular speaking practice with native speakers.

💡

Always compare prices per 60-minute hour. Some providers sell lessons of 25, 45 or 50 minutes, which makes a package look cheaper than it is.

8 questions to ask before booking a Spanish course

An online Spanish course suits you when it matches your goal, your variety of Spanish and your schedule. Ask the provider for written answers before you pay.

  1. Does the provider offer a placement test that places you on the scale of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) from A1 to C2?
  2. Does the teacher teach the Spanish of Spain or of Latin America, and does that match your goal?
  3. Has the teacher trained to teach Spanish as a foreign language, a field called ELE (Español como Lengua Extranjera)?
  4. How many minutes do you speak yourself in each lesson?
  5. Do you get written feedback on your own texts?
  6. Can you book a trial lesson and reschedule at short notice?
  7. How long is the contract, and how do you cancel?
  8. Where does the provider store your recordings and data, and does it follow data protection law such as the EU's GDPR?

For DELE preparation one more qualification counts. The Instituto Cervantes trains and accredits DELE examiners. A teacher with this accreditation knows the marking criteria of the speaking test first-hand.

✅

A good course tests your level at the start and at the end.

It practises ser and estar, the past tenses and the subjunctive in conversation.

It sets at least one speaking and one writing task per week with feedback.

⚠️

Be careful with promises such as fluent in 30 days.

An annual subscription without a trial is a warning sign.

A provider's own certificate does not replace the DELE or the SIELE.

9

Spanish for study and work in Spain, Latin America and the US

Spanish opens doors in several fields. Universities in Spain and Latin America often recommend or require level B1 or B2 for exchange students, the third or fourth of six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

At work, Spanish counts in healthcare, education, social services, tourism, trade and logistics. In the US, staff who can speak with Spanish-speaking patients, parents or customers are in demand in many regions. Doctors who want to enter Spain's MIR specialist training can prove their Spanish with the DELE C1 or C2, according to the Instituto Cervantes.

Link the course to your daily life. Five habits help.

  • Listen to Spanish podcasts or news for 20 minutes every day.
  • Watch series from Spain or Latin America with Spanish subtitles.
  • Repeat sentences straight after a recording. This technique is called shadowing.
  • Review vocabulary with a flashcard app that spaces out repetitions automatically.
  • Write a short text every week and have it corrected.
ℹ️

If you need Spanish for a trip in three months, choose a conversation course up to A2. If you need Spanish for your job, plan for at least B1 and ideally B2, because from B2 you can follow meetings without translation.

Frequently asked questions about online Spanish courses

How long does it take an English speaker to learn Spanish online?

An English speaker needs about 690 class hours plus self-study to work confidently in Spanish, according to the US Foreign Service Institute. That level is roughly comparable to C1. For simple travel conversations at level A2, far fewer hours are enough, often one or two courses over a few months.

What is the difference between the DELE and the SIELE?

The DELE is a diploma for one specific level from A1 to C2 and never expires. The SIELE is a computer-based exam that measures your level from A1 to C1 on a scale of 0 to 1,000 points and is valid for five years. The Instituto Cervantes is involved in both exams.

Should I learn Spanish from Spain or from Latin America?

Spanish from Spain and Spanish from Latin America are mutually understandable without difficulty. Choose the variety of the country where you plan to travel, study or work; in the US, that is usually Latin American Spanish. The DELE and SIELE exams accept both.

How much do online one-to-one Spanish lessons cost per hour?

Online one-to-one Spanish lessons cost roughly 10 to 45 euros or dollars per hour in 2026. Teachers in Latin America often charge less than teachers in Spain or the US. Compare offers on the basis of a 60-minute hour.

What Spanish level do I need for Spanish citizenship?

Spanish citizenship by residence requires the DELE A2 or higher plus the CCSE test on Spain's constitution and society. Nationals of Spanish-speaking countries are exempt from the DELE. The Instituto Cervantes runs both tests.

Can I take the DELE exam online?

No, the DELE exam takes place on paper at a test centre, including the speaking part. You can do all of the preparation online. The SIELE is taken on a computer, also at a test centre.

What Spanish level do I need to use Spanish at work?

Spanish at work becomes usable from level B1, the third of six CEFR levels, for simple emails and calls. From B2 you can follow meetings and negotiations without translation. Contracts and specialist texts usually require C1.

What can an AI tutor do in an online Spanish course?

An AI tutor in an online Spanish course offers unlimited speaking practice and scores your pronunciation, such as the rolled rr, instantly with speech recognition. It detects recurring errors with ser and estar or the past tenses. A human teacher judges politeness and regional word choice more reliably.
