A general Spanish course from A1 to C2
A general Spanish course follows the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the European scale from A1 for beginners to C2 for near-native command. The Instituto Cervantes, Spain's public institute for the Spanish language, sets out the content of these levels for Spanish in its Plan curricular, with grammar, pronunciation, spelling and functions.
| Stage | Focus of a general Spanish course | Typical sticking point |
|---|---|---|
| A1 to A2 | present tense, gender and agreement, everyday vocabulary | ser or estar |
| B1 | the two past tenses, first uses of the subjunctive | preterite or imperfect |
| B2 | subjunctive in complex sentences, por and para, register | the subjunctive |
| C1 to C2 | idioms, regional variation, formal writing | precision |
The US Foreign Service Institute (FSI), the language school of the State Department, estimates about 690 class hours for English speakers to work confidently in Spanish, a level often compared with C1. There is no official table of hours per level for Spanish, and many schools plan with the Cambridge figure of about 200 guided hours per level that applies to English.
In an evening course with three hours a week, 690 class hours take more than four years. Set milestones instead, such as A2 for travel and B1 for simple conversations at work.
Spanish sounds and spelling in a general course
Spanish spelling matches pronunciation almost every time, so after a few weeks you can read new words aloud correctly. An accent mark, as in café, shows which syllable carries the stress.
English speakers still need practice in four areas.
- Spanish has five short, pure vowels. English speakers tend to turn unstressed vowels into the weak English schwa or glide them into diphthongs, which blurs words such as casa and cosa.
- The single r in pero is a quick tap, like the tt in American butter, while the rolled rr in perro is a trill. Swapping them changes the word from but to dog.
- The j in jamón sounds close to the ch in Scottish loch.
- Spanish p, t and k come without the puff of air that English adds, so 'taco' said the English way sounds foreign.
A general course trains these sounds with minimal pairs, meaning two words that differ in only one sound, such as pero and perro. A conversation course adds shadowing, in which you repeat a recording straight after the speaker to copy rhythm and intonation.
Ser and estar, past tenses and the subjunctive
Spanish grammar has more verb forms than English, and four topics take English speakers the longest. A general course returns to each of them at several levels.
1 Ser and estar
Both verbs mean to be. Ser describes lasting traits, estar states and locations: 'soy aburrido' means I am boring, 'estoy aburrido' I am bored.
2 Preterite and imperfect
The preterite tells completed events, the imperfect describes background and habits. English uses one simple past for both.
3 The subjunctive
The subjunctive is a verb form for wishes, doubts and possibilities. Spanish needs it after 'quiero que' (I want you to) or in future time clauses such as 'cuando llegues' (when you arrive).
4 Gender, agreement and dropped subjects
Every noun is masculine or feminine, and articles and adjectives agree with it. Spanish usually drops the subject pronoun, because the verb ending shows who acts.
A good general course practises these topics in speaking tasks after each explanation. They decide whether you move beyond B1, the third of the six CEFR levels on the European scale from A1 to C2.
General or conversation course and your variety
A general Spanish course follows a fixed syllabus and trains all four skills. A conversation course spends the lesson on speaking, pronunciation and situations such as restaurants, travel or a visit to the doctor. Both state their level on the CEFR, the European six-level scale from A1 to C2.
| Your situation | Course type that fits |
|---|---|
| beginner, level A1 | general Spanish course |
| some school Spanish, much forgotten | refresher course at A2 or B1 |
| you understand but freeze when speaking | conversation course from about A2 |
| stuck at B1 with the past tenses | general course plus conversation |
Choose the variety before the teacher. Learners in North America mostly study Latin American Spanish, close to Mexican usage, while learners in the UK and Ireland more often start with the Spanish of Spain. Speakers of all varieties understand each other without difficulty, so the choice depends on where you will use Spanish.
A language exchange costs nothing. You practise with a Spanish speaker by video call, half the time in Spanish and half in English. It gives you regular speaking practice but does not replace a teacher who corrects you.
Online formats for general Spanish and their prices
Prices for online Spanish lessons depend mainly on the format and on the teacher's country. Teachers in Latin America often charge less than teachers in Spain, the UK or the US. The ranges are rough 2026 market values, and prices in US dollars or pounds are of a similar order.
Time zones help with Spanish. Teachers in Mexico, Colombia or Guatemala share time zones with North America, so evening classes are easy to schedule there. Teachers in Madrid or Seville are only one hour ahead of London.
The Instituto Cervantes runs its own online learning platform, AVE Global, for self-study or with a tutor. For live lessons, ask whether the teacher trained in Spanish as a foreign language, a field called ELE (Español como Lengua Extranjera).
Online Spanish for children and the school DELE
Children learn Spanish online in short sessions with songs, games and pictures. Many providers sell lessons of 25 or 45 minutes, a length that suits a child's attention better than a full hour.
The Instituto Cervantes offers school versions of the DELE, the official Spanish diploma, for students aged 11 to 17.
| School DELE | Levels awarded |
|---|---|
| DELE A1 for school students | A1 |
| DELE A2/B1 for school students | A2 or B1, depending on the result |
| DELE B2/C1 for school students | B2 or C1, depending on the result |
The levels follow the CEFR, the European six-level scale from A1 to C2. In the US, many states award high school students a Seal of Biliteracy, which records command of two languages on the transcript and suits children who grow up with Spanish at home.
Data protection deserves extra care. In the US, the COPPA law requires verifiable parental consent before an app collects data from children under 13. In the EU, a child under 16 needs a parent's consent when an app relies on consent, and each country may lower that age to 13.
Ask whether the teacher has experience with children and whether lessons are recorded. A trial lesson shows whether your child speaks or only listens.
Frequently asked questions about general online Spanish courses
How many hours does an English speaker need to learn Spanish in an online course?
An English speaker needs about 690 class hours plus self-study to work confidently in Spanish, according to the US Foreign Service Institute. That level is often compared with C1, the fifth of six CEFR levels. For simple travel conversations at A2, a few months of regular lessons are often enough.
Should a general Spanish course teach the Spanish of Spain or of Latin America?
A general Spanish course should teach the variety of the country where you plan to use Spanish. Learners in North America mostly choose Latin American Spanish, and learners in the UK and Ireland often choose the Spanish of Spain. Speakers of all varieties understand each other without difficulty.
From which level can you join a Spanish conversation course?
You can join a Spanish conversation course from about level A2, the second of six CEFR levels. At A2 you know the present tense and basic vocabulary and can handle simple exchanges. At A1, a general Spanish course first builds the grammar you need.
Which Spanish grammar topics take English speakers the longest in a general course?
English speakers in a general Spanish course take the longest with ser and estar, the preterite and imperfect, and the subjunctive. English has no direct equivalent for any of the three. A good course practises them in speaking tasks rather than only with tables.
Is there a recognised Spanish exam for school children?
Yes, the Instituto Cervantes offers school versions of the DELE, the official Spanish diploma, for students aged 11 to 17. They come as DELE A1, A2/B1 and B2/C1, and the double exams award one of two levels depending on the result. The diploma never expires.
What does a one-to-one online Spanish lesson cost?
A one-to-one online Spanish lesson costs about 10 to 45 euros or dollars per hour in 2026. Teachers in Latin America often charge less than teachers in Spain or the US. Compare offers per 60-minute hour, because some providers sell 25-, 45- or 50-minute lessons.
