About the Private Institute

Fernakademie für Erwachsenenbildung GmbH is a Hamburg-based distance learning provider offering state-approved programs in business, technology, IT, health, and general education. The academy delivers distance learning alongside selected on-site seminars, using its Online-Studienzentrum for assignments, tutoring, and digital study tools. All courses are approved by the Staatliche Zentralstelle für Fernunterricht (ZFU) in Köln and end with a Fernakademie report or certificate. Some also prepare students for external examinations, such as state examinations or chamber examinations like IHK qualifications.

Study Programs

Fernakademie für Erwachsenenbildung provides a wide range of state-approved distance learning courses across three specialized subject academies: Wirtschaft & Management, Allgemeinbildung, Medien & Gesundheit, as well as Technik & IT. The entire program portfolio is designed for distance learning, combining printed study booklets, digital materials, and the web-based Online-Studienzentrum platform. Depending on the course, distance learning may be accompanied by online sessions or on-site seminars, which are compulsory in some courses, such as the technician programs. All distance education courses comply with statutory provisions and are reviewed and approved by the Staatliche Zentralstelle für Fernunterricht (ZFU) in Köln. In the division for Wirtschaft & Management, the portfolio covers business practice and commercial qualifications. The academy prepares students for public-law examinations, including credentials such as Geprüfter Betriebswirt (IHK) and Fachwirt (IHK). It also offers institutional qualifications such as Betriebswirt (Fernakademie) with a specialization in Wirtschaftsinformatik, alongside targeted courses in commercial disciplines, including Englische Handels- und Betriebswirtschaftslehre (UK und USA). The division for Allgemeinbildung, Medien & Gesundheit provides general education qualifications, language training, and professional development in health and media disciplines. Students can prepare through distance education to complete secondary school qualifications such as the Abitur, or study for the Latinum and Großes Latinum. Language offerings range from foundational to advanced courses in languages such as Spanish, French, and Russian, as well as professional language programs like Wirtschaftsenglisch, Technisches Englisch, and International Legal English, or preparation for external diplomas like the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English and the Diploma Salamanca. Personal development programs include training to become a Psychologischer Berater / Personal Coach, while educational technology is covered by programs such as Lehrerfortbildung multimediale Unterrichtsgestaltung. In the fields of Technik & IT, the academy offers technical training preparing students for state and trade credentials, including the Meister and staatlich geprüfter Techniker qualifications. It also offers continuing education courses for Fachinformatiker (Fernakademie) with specializations in Anwendungsentwicklung, Digitalisierung, and Systemintegration, which end with the Fernakademie report, not with an IHK examination. The programming and software development curriculum includes specialized courses in Python, C#, C++, Java, VBA, PHP database development, web development, webmaster courses using WordPress, application management, and user experience design with certificates such as Certified UX Designer. Technical application training includes computer-aided design (CAD) programs, Speicherprogrammierbare Steuerung (SPS), NC- und CNC-Technik, and practical office software training covering Microsoft Office. Instruction is delivered remotely. However, the technician programs include compulsory on-site seminars, depending on the specialization for example in Hannover, Hamburg, Dresden, or Munich, and the CAD-Konstrukteur course offers two optional practical seminars in Darmstadt. Students who complete their distance learning course and submit all assigned work receive the FERNAKADEMIE-Abschlusszeugnis. In many programs, completing an additional requirement such as a home examination, seminar participation with an examination, or a final thesis leads to the FERNAKADEMIE-Abschlusszertifikat, including titles such as Geprüfte/r IT-Manager/in or Geprüfte/r CAD-Konstrukteur/in. This credential can also be issued as an international certificate in English. In examination prep courses, students are guided toward external state, chamber (IHK), or language examinations.

Application Procedure

General entry requirements depend on the program, with everyday computer literacy required for introductory courses and relevant vocational training needed for specialized courses like Bauzeichnen mit CAD. For external examinations such as IHK diplomas or Cambridge certificates, participants must verify and present required qualifications directly to the examining bodies. Registration is possible online in three steps (personal details and course, prior education and payment method, review and confirmation) or in writing with the registration form by post. If a course has entry requirements, the Fernakademie checks them on the basis of this information, and the contract is concluded with the registration confirmation. Enrollment is open year-round with no fixed start dates or deadlines. Tuition fees are structured as fixed monthly installments, and online applicants receive a 10 percent discount. According to the terms and conditions, shipments abroad may incur additional costs; the 2025 registration form lists 2.90 euros per month for other European countries and 9.70 euros for countries outside Europe. Payments are made monthly by SEPA direct debit or by bank transfer or standing order; according to the 2025 registration form, the payee is Klett Online-Weiterbildung GmbH & Co. KG (account at Deutsche Bank Hamburg). Optional on-site workshops and external examination fees require separate payments. In the event of unforeseeable serious circumstances such as long-term illness or unemployment, students can, according to the 2025 registration form, apply for a temporary deferral of installments under a social guarantee. The study advisory service advises on funding options such as Aufstiegs-BAföG, education vouchers from the federal states, or Schüler-BAföG. Enrollment begins with a four-week trial period without financial risk. If canceling during this trial, students must return materials within 14 days, with return shipping covered by Fernakademie für Erwachsenenbildung. Beyond the trial phase, contracts have a minimum term of one month. According to the terms and conditions, students may terminate the contract at any time without giving reasons with a notice period of one month to the end of the following month, in text form or via the cancellation form on the website.
