About the Private Institute

Studiengemeinschaft Darmstadt, founded in 1948 and based in Darmstadt, teaches around 60,000 distance learners per year according to its own figures (as of October 2026). SGD is a distance learning school without on-site degree programs: teaching takes place through distance learning with online formats, and some courses include mandatory in-person seminars. Its catalog includes around 300 distance learning courses approved by the German Central Office for Distance Learning (ZFU) across business, technology, health, informatics, and secondary school qualifications, combining digital study on the SGD-OnlineCampus with dedicated tutoring.

Study Programs

Studiengemeinschaft Darmstadt offers an extensive portfolio of around 300 distance learning courses approved by the Staatliche Zentralstelle für Fernunterricht (ZFU). The institution organizes its academic and continuing education programs across nine core subject areas: school qualifications; business; coaching, psychology, and pedagogy; technology, master craftsman, and technical courses; health and wellness; animals and nature; information technology and digital media; creative professions; and general education and languages. Program formats include comprehensive multi-year courses, compact courses designed to be completed in half the regular duration, and advanced building-block courses that allow learners with prior knowledge to bypass introductory modules. Selected courses also qualify for credit transfer toward academic degree programs at partner universities. Within the school qualifications segment, learners can complete adult education programs preparing for external state examinations, including the Hauptschulabschluss, the Realschulabschluss, the Fachhochschulreife, and the Abitur. The Fachhochschulreife program is aligned with Hessian state examination regulations and provides specialized subject tracks in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, business and administration, health, and social work. Combined study tracks allow students without intermediate schooling to earn both the Realschulabschluss and Fachhochschulreife sequentially. SGD also delivers modular upper-secondary school courses covering Gymnasium-level curriculum in individual subjects such as German, mathematics, biology, geography, history, religion, politics and economics, physics, chemistry, and art. In business, management, and technical disciplines, the portfolio features numerous preparatory courses for public-law Chamber of Commerce and Industry qualifications, known as IHK examinations, which align with German Qualifications Framework levels six and seven. Examples include certified technical business administrators, certified technical management specialists, certified business specialists, certified logistics masters, railway traffic masters with in-person seminars held in cooperation with DB Training, and vocational educators at the master level. SGD also prepares participants for the instructor aptitude examination under the Trainer Aptitude Regulation, as well as state-certified technician examinations in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, chemical engineering, and construction engineering. Professional certificate courses and digital skills training cover a broad spectrum of emerging fields. Technology and IT offerings include certified Python programmer, certified C-sharp software developer, certified agile software developer, web application developer, information security officer, and pure online preparation for Scrum.org Professional Scrum Master I certification. In media, commerce, and service professions, the institution provides certified qualifications in online marketing management, e-commerce specialization, photo design, and certified property management under Section 26a of the German Condominium Act. Healthcare and consulting courses include certified nursing care advisors, which offer continuing education points recognized by the German professional nursing register. Instruction is conducted through flexible distance learning using digital study booklets, physical course binders, mobile learning applications, and the SGD-OnlineCampus platform. According to SGD, most courses are supplemented by webinars or in-person seminars, attendance at which is usually voluntary; select courses incorporate mandatory on-site requirements. Specifically, preparation for the state-certified technician examination mandates three six-day seminars held in person at the Campe Bildungszentrum in Hannover, where the state examination also takes place, and the certificate in the nursing care advisor course requires a nine-day care internship in a care facility of the participant's choice unless the participant already has nursing experience. Depending on the course track, graduates earn the SGD-Abschlusszeugnis (final report), the SGD-Zertifikat, digital Open Badges, certificates from cooperation partners or, after passing the examination with the responsible body, state and public-law qualifications.

Application Procedure

General personal interest courses and foundational certificates require only basic computer literacy and an internet connection. For courses preparing for IHK or state qualifications, the stricter requirements usually apply to the examination rather than the course: the examining body generally requires relevant vocational training with work experience or several years of professional experience. Admission to the examination is also possible if equivalent competencies are credibly demonstrated through certificates or other evidence. The same applies to the Heilpraktiker courses: a minimum age of 25, a Hauptschulabschluss, a certificate of good conduct and a medical examination are requirements for the official examination at the local health office; for the course itself SGD recommends an intermediate school-leaving certificate and completing a first aid course by the end of the course. The minimum age for SGD courses is 16. Applicants submit an application online or send a signed paper form by mail or email, with the contract only taking effect upon receipt of the registration confirmation. Applications are accepted year-round with no enrollment deadlines, allowing students to start on any day of the year. Tuition fees vary by program, exclude external examination fees, and are paid through SEPA direct debit or customized installment plans. Funding options include education vouchers, activation vouchers, Aufstiegs-BAföG grants, employer subsidies, military vocational service, and state grants. Fee discounts of ten to thirty percent are available for eligible groups and alumni (as of October 2026). Enrollments include a four-week free trial period allowing cancellation without cost. The contract can be cancelled for the first time at the end of the first six months with six weeks' notice, and at any time thereafter with three months' notice; contracts with a total term of less than six months cannot be cancelled by ordinary notice.
