Portuguese at work in Brazil, Portugal and Lusophone Africa

Portuguese is the official language of nine countries, which together form the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). For work, three regions matter most, and the region of your partners decides which variant a course should teach. A variant is one of the two standards of the language, Brazilian or European Portuguese.

RegionTypical work contextsVariant to learn

Portugaljobs with Portuguese employers, remote work, projects with Portuguese partnersEuropean
Angola, Mozambiquedevelopment cooperation and energy projectsEuropean in writing

Brazil is also a founding member of Mercosur, the South American trade bloc, which makes Portuguese useful for regional sales teams working with Brazilian customers from Argentina, Uruguay or Paraguay.

The African countries mostly follow the European standard in writing, while everyday speech has its own local features. A course with a teacher from Portugal therefore prepares you for official documents in Luanda or Maputo, and listening practice with local recordings covers the rest.

Brasília is one to two hours ahead of US Eastern Time and Lisbon about five. Calls with Brazil fit easily into a North American working day, and calls with Portugal fit into the morning.

Business Portuguese or specialised Portuguese by role

Courses for work come in two types. Business communication trains how you work in Portuguese, meaning emails, calls, meetings, presentations and negotiations. Specialised language trains what you talk about in one profession, with its terms and text types.

Business Portuguese suits sales, purchasing, project management and management roles with partners in Brazil or Portugal. Specialised courses exist mainly for medicine and care work, where patient talks and documentation follow fixed patterns.

Spanish speakers have a special risk at work. They understand Portuguese texts quickly and are tempted to answer in portunhol, a mix of Spanish and Portuguese. In a negotiation, that mix sounds careless, so a business course for Spanish speakers should correct it consistently.

👍 Advantages
  • ✓Business Portuguese works in almost any job that deals with Brazil or Portugal.
  • ✓Specialised Portuguese prepares you for the texts and conversations of one profession.
👎 Drawbacks
  • ✗Business Portuguese does not cover the terms of medicine, care or engineering.
  • ✗Specialised Portuguese courses are rare online and often fixed to one variant.

Work vocabulary and etiquette in Brazil and Portugal

Partners in Brazil and Portugal understand each other, but office vocabulary and email conventions differ. A business course should teach the forms of the variant your partners use.

Forms of address differ as well. In Brazil, colleagues switch to você quickly, while formal emails to clients use o senhor or a senhora. In Portugal, formal address often includes professional titles, such as Doutor for university graduates or Engenheiro for engineers.

Some conventions are the same in both countries. Dates put the day before the month, as in 15/03/2026, and numbers use a comma as decimal separator, so 2,5 milhões means 2.5 million. Learners from English-speaking countries should practise both before the first offer or invoice in Portuguese.

💡

Write to each partner in that partner's variant. A Brazilian planilha in an email to Lisbon is understood, but it shows that the writer did not adapt.

B1 to C1 at work and the certificates that prove it

Business Portuguese courses usually start at B1 of the CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages with six levels from A1 to C2. At B1 you handle everyday life without help, and work language builds on that base. As guide values from the CEFR descriptions, B1 covers standard emails, B2 covers meetings and presentations, and negotiations and contracts call for B2 to C1. Job adverts rarely name a CEFR level and say fluent instead, which roughly corresponds to B2 to C1.

Two certificate systems prove Portuguese at work.

  • CAPLE, the University of Lisbon's centre for Portuguese as a foreign language, sets one exam per level, with the DEPLE for B1, the DIPLE for B2, the DAPLE for C1 and the DUPLE for C2. According to CAPLE, institutions in Portugal and abroad recognise them for professional purposes. In 2026 they cost 115 to 170 euros at the University of the Algarve.
  • The Celpe-Bras of Inep, Brazil's education testing institute, is the only Portuguese certificate officially granted by the Brazilian government. It is a single exam with four levels on a scale from 0 to 5.
⚠️

The Celpe-Bras reports its own four levels, from Intermediário to Avançado Superior, and no CEFR level. Put the level name and the score on your CV so that employers outside Brazil can place it.

6 modules of a typical business Portuguese course

A business Portuguese course starts with a needs analysis, a conversation or questionnaire about your tasks, partners and difficulties. The teacher then builds the course from modules like these.

  1. Emails and messages in the right register, with the closing formulas of your partners' variant.
  2. Phone and video calls, including numbers, dates and spelling names aloud.
  3. Meetings, where you agree, disagree politely and sum up decisions.
  4. Presentations of your company, product or project, with questions afterwards.
  5. Negotiations about prices, deadlines and conditions.
  6. Small talk before and after meetings, which Brazilian partners in particular use to build trust.

One-to-one Portuguese lessons online cost roughly 12 to 35 US dollars an hour in 2026, and business trainers often charge more. Many employers pay for the course in full or in part when the job requires Portuguese. A request that names concrete tasks, a target level and a date has the best chance.

Frequently asked questions about online Portuguese courses for work

Which Portuguese variant does a business course need for work with Brazil?

A business Portuguese course for work with Brazil should teach Brazilian Portuguese, with a teacher from Brazil. Pronunciation, forms of address and office words such as planilha (spreadsheet) or equipe (team) differ from European Portuguese. Partners in Portugal, Angola and Mozambique are closer to the European standard.

What level of Portuguese do employers expect for meetings and negotiations?

For meetings in Portuguese, employers usually expect level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), and for negotiations B2 to C1. Standard emails are often possible at B1. The binding requirement is set by the employer, and job adverts often say fluent instead of naming a level.

Which certificate proves Portuguese for a job in Portugal?

A job in Portugal is usually backed by a CAPLE exam from the University of Lisbon, such as the DEPLE for B1, the DIPLE for B2 or the DAPLE for C1. According to CAPLE, institutions in Portugal and abroad recognise these exams for professional purposes. In 2026 they cost 115 to 155 euros at the University of the Algarve.

Do employers in Brazil know the Celpe-Bras Portuguese certificate?

The Celpe-Bras is the only Portuguese certificate officially granted by the Brazilian government, which makes it the reference for Portuguese in Brazil. It reports four levels from Intermediário to Avançado Superior on a scale from 0 to 5. Whether an employer requires it, and at which level, the employer decides.

How long does business Portuguese take from level B1 to level B2?

Business Portuguese takes roughly 150 to 200 guided learning hours from B1 to B2, using the Cambridge English guide values, which were set for English. Portuguese is in the same FSI category as Spanish and French, so the figure works as a rough guide. At five hours a week, the step takes around nine months.

Can a Spanish speaker start a business Portuguese course without a general course?

A Spanish speaker can often start a business Portuguese course sooner than other learners, because reading comprehension comes quickly. The risk is portunhol, a mix of both languages that sounds careless in negotiations. A placement test with a speaking part shows whether pronunciation and grammar already reach B1.
