Degree programmes that require Latin
In the United Kingdom and the United States, Latin is mostly part of the degree itself, for example in classics, ancient history or medieval studies. School qualifications count on the way in. The College Board compares AP Latin to an intermediate university Latin course in the third or fourth semester, and each college decides whether it grants credit or placement for the score.
In Germany, Latin works differently. Many programmes do not need it for admission, but their examination regulations require proof by a certain point in the degree. There are three levels: basic Latin (Lateinkenntnisse) equals about three textbook years, the Kleines Latinum certifies reading simple prose such as Caesar, and the Latinum certifies reading demanding passages of Cicero.
| Subject | Why Latin is needed | Proof at the University of Regensburg |
|---|---|---|
| Classical archaeology, medieval studies | inscriptions and sources in the original | Latinum |
| Catholic theology, Magister | Church Fathers, council texts, Church documents | Latinum or faculty exam |
| Secondary teacher training in German, English, French, history, Italian, Spanish | language history and historical sources | Kleines Latinum |
| Bachelor in history as a major | medieval and early modern sources | basic Latin |
Theology programmes often also require the Graecum for Ancient Greek and in some cases the Hebraicum for Hebrew.
Read the exact wording of your regulations. If they ask only for Lateinkenntnisse, you save several months of preparation compared with the full Latinum.
Earning Latin before or during your degree
If you learn Latin during your degree, the workload comes on top of your subject's compulsory classes. The University of Regensburg shows how much time it takes. Its Latinum course amounts to 12 semester weekly hours (SWS), one SWS being one class hour per week over a semester.
On top of this, the university explicitly recommends daily study on days without class. The intensive phase falls into the semester break, when many subjects also set placements or essays.
Online preparation before your first semester eases this load. If you finish the textbook stage beforehand, meaning forms, core vocabulary and simple sentence structure, you can join the university course at the reading stage. Ask in advance whether the university offers a placement test for its Latin courses.
Combining a university course with online lessons
German universities offer Latin courses mainly to enrolled students. In Bavaria these courses prepare you for the state supplementary exam, an additional exam to the German school-leaving certificate, which you sit at a designated grammar school. University towns hold exams at the end of each semester, with registration by 15 January or 15 June. In North Rhine-Westphalia you register with the district government by 15 January or 15 July.
Online options fill the gaps of the university course.
- โThe university course follows the exam date and the exam syllabus.
- โPrivate video lessons mark your translations and train the oral exam.
- โA German distance course approved by the State Central Office for Distance Learning (ZFU) follows a checked course design.
- โA university course leaves little time to mark individual translations.
- โPrivate lessons cost more per hour than a group.
- โZFU-approved distance courses are taught in German and cost about 800 to 1,700 euros (as of 2026).
A weekly plan for the first year with Latin
A fixed weekly plan stops Latin from falling behind your subject classes. The example assumes the Regensburg model with three course sessions a week in the winter semester.
| Element | Time per week | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| University course sessions | 3 x 60 minutes | new material and joint translation |
| Vocabulary and forms | 6 x 15 minutes | review at growing intervals |
| Own translation | 2 x 45 minutes | homework as a complete text |
| Online private lesson | 60 minutes every two weeks | marking and explanation of your error types |
Review at growing intervals means testing a word again after one day, three days and a week. This method is called spaced repetition, and many vocabulary apps use it.
In the intensive phase of the semester break the focus shifts to reading. The private lesson then practises mock exams under time pressure, because candidates in Bavaria translate a text of about 180 words in 180 minutes.
Citing and translating Latin sources at university
If you work with Latin texts at university, you cite them by fixed rules. Ancient authors are not cited by page number but by book, chapter and section, which stay the same in every edition. Caesar, Gallic War 1.1 means book 1, chapter 1. The text itself comes from a critical edition, an edition that records the differences between the surviving manuscripts, such as the Oxford Classical Texts.
You will meet two kinds of translation. A working translation stays close to the Latin sentence structure and shows that you have understood the grammar. A translation into natural English or German conveys the meaning in idiomatic language, and that is also what the German Latinum asks for.
Digital aids make the work easier. The Perseus Digital Library of Tufts University analyses every word form of a Latin text. For quotations in an essay, check the wording against the critical edition your department uses.
An online reading course for university students should also show how to cite by book and chapter and how to use a critical edition. Ask about this before you book.
Latin for international students in Germany
The German Latinum tests translation into German, and the oral discussion also takes place in German. If you come to Germany from abroad, you therefore need confident written German in addition to Latin.
Foreign Latin qualifications do not replace the Latinum automatically. That applies to a British A level, to AP Latin from the US and to Latรญn II from the Spanish Bachillerato. German universities can recognise them after an individual check for equivalence. Austria and Switzerland set their own Latin requirements.
Send your foreign certificate to the student advisory service before your degree starts and ask in writing which level it covers. If you hold a foreign school-leaving certificate and want to sit the supplementary exam in North Rhine-Westphalia, ask the district government about admission first.
Frequently asked questions about online Latin courses for university
Does AP Latin earn college credit in the United States?
AP Latin can earn college credit or placement in the United States, but each college decides its own policy for AP scores. The College Board compares the course to an intermediate university Latin course in the third or fourth semester. Check the credit policy of your college before you plan your Latin classes.
When must proof of Latin be submitted in a German degree?
Proof of Latin in a German degree is due by the deadline in the examination regulations of your programme. Many students earn it during their first semesters in courses at their own university. Ask the student advisory service in writing which certificate you need and by when.
Can you earn the Latinum alongside the first year of a degree?
You can earn the Latinum alongside the first year of a degree if you plan for the extra workload. The University of Regensburg runs its course over two semesters with 12 semester weekly hours and an intensive phase of about five weeks in the semester break. Finishing the textbook stage online before your degree eases this year.
How do you cite Latin authors in a university essay?
You cite Latin authors in a university essay by book, chapter and section instead of page numbers, for example Caesar, Gallic War 1.1 for book 1, chapter 1. This numbering is the same in every edition. Take the wording from a critical edition.
Does a British A level in Latin count as a Latinum at German universities?
A British A level in Latin does not count as a Latinum at German universities automatically. German universities can recognise foreign Latin qualifications after an individual check for equivalence. Clarify recognition in writing with your university before your degree starts.
Where do students in Bavaria sit the Latinum exam?
Students in Bavaria sit the Latinum exam as a state supplementary exam at a designated grammar school, not at the university. University towns hold exams at the end of each semester, with registration by 15 January or 15 June. University Latin courses prepare for this exam.
